When considering a trip to the ancient city of Tokat, every traveler visiting Turkey should definitely include the Yağıbasan Madrasah in their itinerary. This is not just a historic building, but one of the oldest educational centers in Anatolia, erected in the 12th century during the Danishmendid period. Also known as Çukur Medrese, it is a striking example of early Islamic architecture and a symbol of the pursuit of knowledge.

The main feature of the structure is its central domed courtyard, measuring 14 meters in diameter. In the very center of the dome is a ten-meter opening, which in ancient times allowed students to observe the sky, symbolizing the connection between science and the universe. The austere building made of rubble stone lacks elaborate decoration, which only emphasizes its monumentality and the grandeur of the engineering thought of that time.
Today, the madrasah is recognized as a unique monument of global significance, being the "twin" of a similar institution in Niksar. Together, they are considered the world's first madrasahs with a central dome. Inside, you can see the iwans (vaulted halls) and rooms characteristic of that period, which once housed a library, kitchen, and classrooms for future scholars and thinkers.
