History & Facts

The history of the site where Zeus Antik is located is inextricably linked to ancient Antioch—one of the greatest metropolises of the ancient world. Even before the official founding of the city, a small Greek settlement called Iopolis existed here. Legends say that Alexander the Great himself stayed in these parts and erected an altar in honor of the thunderer Zeus, whose name the establishment now bears.

After the era of Alexander, the territory came under the rule of the Seleucids. King Seleucus I Nicator founded the majestic Antioch here, naming it after his father. The city quickly turned into a thriving center of trade and culture, standing at the crossroads of East and West. It was here, within the walls of this ancient city, that the followers of the new faith were first called Christians.

The Roman and Byzantine periods turned the region into a true treasure trove of art. Archaeological finds, including the famous mosaics of the 2nd–3rd centuries, testify to the incredible wealth and sophisticated taste of the local inhabitants. Today, while in the Zenginler district, you can literally feel the breath of millennia hidden beneath the modern pavements.
