The climate in Cannes, located on the French Riviera, is typically Mediterranean, ensuring pleasant weather for most of the year. It is characterized by warm, sunny summers and mild, moderately humid winters. The city enjoys a large number of sunny days, making it an attractive destination for tourists almost all year round.
The summer months, especially July and August, are the hottest and driest, with average temperatures reaching 23°C and maximums around 27°C. Rainfall is minimal during this time. Winter, from December to February, remains mild, with average temperatures around 7-8°C and rare frosts. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures and slightly more precipitation compared to summer, particularly in October and November. The highest number of rainy days occurs in May, although the total rainfall volume remains low.
Temperature
The climate in Cannes is characterized by typical Mediterranean features, with mild winters and hot, sunny summers. Throughout the year, the temperature regime undergoes noticeable changes. The hottest month is usually August, when the average air temperature is about 23.1°C, and daily highs regularly reach 27.4°C. January is considered the coolest month: the average temperature drops to 6.7°C during this time, while nighttime lows can reach 2.8°C.
The summer period in Cannes, covering June, July, and August, is distinguished by consistently warm and predominantly dry weather. Daily average temperatures in June are around 20°C, gradually rising towards August. The daytime heat, especially in July and August when the thermometer rises to 27°C and above, is perfect for a beach holiday. Evenings bring pleasant coolness: nighttime temperatures in the summer months range from 15.8°C to 18.8°C, creating comfortable conditions for evening walks and outdoor relaxation.
Winter in Cannes is mild, without the severe frosts characteristic of continental regions. From December to February, average temperatures stay in the range of 6.7°C to 7.7°C. Nighttime temperatures in the coldest months (January, December) can drop to 2.8-3.8°C, while during the day the air usually warms up to 10-12°C. Fluctuations between day and night temperatures are quite perceptible, averaging 7-9°C throughout the year. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with moderate temperatures, gradually rising towards summer and falling towards winter.
Precipitation
A Mediterranean climate prevails in Cannes, characterized by a moderate amount of precipitation throughout the year. The city does not experience a distinct season of heavy rains; precipitation is distributed unevenly, with peaks in certain months. Given the mild winters, snow here is an extremely rare phenomenon, so precipitation falls predominantly as rain.
The driest month in Cannes in terms of precipitation volume is traditionally July, when only about 1 mm falls. The number of rainy days in July, standing at approximately 8, is one of the lowest in the year, although January and February have an even smaller number of rainy days – 7 each. This makes mid-summer particularly attractive for lovers of sunny weather. The greatest amount of precipitation, about 5 mm, falls in October, making it the wettest month. November follows slightly behind with a figure of 4 mm.
Regarding the frequency of rains, the picture is somewhat different. May stands out with the highest number of days with precipitation – on average 16, although their total amount remains comparatively small (about 3 mm). This indicates that May rains are generally light and short-lived. April and November are also characterized by fairly frequent precipitation, counting approximately 12 rainy days each. As already mentioned, the lowest number of days with rain falls in January and February – about 7 days in each of these months.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Cannes, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. In summer, from June to August, it is sunny and hot here: the average air temperature is 20-23°C, and the maximum can reach 27°C. During this time, you will need light cotton or linen clothing, swimwear, sandals, as well as a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF cream. For evening walks or dining outdoors, bring a light cardigan or shawl, as evenings can be a little cooler.
In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather in Cannes is more changeable. The temperature ranges from +9°C in March to +19°C in May and September, gradually decreasing by November to +10°C. In these off-seasons, the principle of layering is ideal: T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, jumpers, cardigans, and a light jacket or windbreaker. Although the total amount of precipitation is not large, rainy days do happen (especially in April, May, October, and November), so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be very useful. Do not forget comfortable closed shoes for long walks around the city.
In winter, from December to February, it is quite cool in Cannes, with an average temperature of about +7°C, sometimes dropping at night to +2-3°C. For this period, you will need warm clothing: sweaters, warm trousers, a coat or jacket, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves. Although heavy snowfalls are a rarity, a small amount of precipitation in the form of rain is possible, so waterproof shoes and outerwear with moisture protection will make your stay more comfortable.
