Château de Laval

About

Rising from a rocky outcrop above the calm waters of the Mayenne River, Laval Castle serves as the primary symbol of the city of Laval. This majestic structure is a unique architectural duo: the rugged medieval fortress of the Old Castle and the elegant Renaissance gallery of the New Castle.

The site is rightfully considered one of France's most significant historical monuments, having been included in the first national heritage list back in 1840. Today, cultural life thrives within its massive walls: the former residence of the counts now houses the famous Museum of Naive Art.

What to Do

Your introduction to the castle should begin with a stroll through its inner courtyard, where the ruins of the old residence are preserved. Be sure to stop by the 12th-century Romanesque chapel—its simple forms and architectural details offer a glimpse into the spirit of the early Middle Ages.

One of the most exciting parts of the visit is the climb up the keep (main tower). Once at the top, you will be surrounded by ancient 13th-century wooden structures and can appreciate the defensive power of the citadel. From this height, panoramic views of the city rooftops and the winding river unfold before you.

Art lovers should not miss the halls of the Museum of Naive Art and Singular Art. On display are works by original masters whose creativity surprises with its sincerity and unusual perspective on the world. Also, don't forget to examine the building's facade, adorned with exquisite tuffeau stone carvings added during the Renaissance renovations.

Getting There

The majestic silhouette of the fortress dominates the surroundings, so finding it is quite easy. Laval Castle is located at Place de la Tremoille, right in the historic center, on a rocky promontory by the Mayenne River.

The city of Laval itself has excellent rail connections with the country's major hubs. From the train station, you can walk to the castle while enjoying the old streets or take a local taxi. Public transport also runs regularly to the center.

For those traveling by car, it is most convenient to use the coordinates 48.0684263, -0.7711006. The castle is visible from afar thanks to its massive tower, which serves as an excellent landmark for tourists.

History & Facts

The history of this site began as far back as the 11th century, when Guy I established a wooden fortification to control an important ford across the river. Over time, the modest fortress grew into a powerful stone castle, becoming an important political center under the influence of the Capetian dynasty.

One of the most precious relics is the main cylindrical tower (keep), standing 34 meters tall. It is remarkable because its upper part still preserves the original wooden defensive structures—hoardings (hourds)—dating back to 1219–1221. This is a rare example of medieval military architecture that has survived to this day in nearly its original form.

During the Renaissance, the castle was transformed under the direction of Guy XVI, Governor of Brittany. The somber fortress walls were updated with elegant windows featuring intricate carvings and a classic gallery. Later, during the French Revolution, the building served as a prison, and a new chapter in its life began in 1967, when a museum was opened here in honor of the city's famous native—the painter Henri Rousseau.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the architectural ensemble and get acquainted with the museum collection, most travelers need about 1.5–2 hours. This is plenty of time to visit the tower, the chapel, and the exhibition halls.

If you are short on time and only wish to appreciate the exterior of the fortress and admire the panorama of the Mayenne River from the castle courtyard, 45–60 minutes will suffice. However, keep in mind that the interiors and the unique wooden ceilings deserve more careful study.

Working Hours

When planning your visit, please note that the castle is closed to visitors on Mondays. On other days, the fortress gates are open according to the following schedule: from Tuesday to Saturday, guests are welcome from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. On Sundays, the exhibitions can be viewed only in the afternoon—from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

It is worth noting that the museum is usually closed on public holidays, with the exception of July 14th and August 15th. It is recommended to check the current schedule on the official website before your trip, as seasonal changes to the timetable are possible.
