What to Do

Visitors can look forward to an exciting route through the ecosystems of all the world's oceans. The journey begins in the Atlantic Room with species typical of local waters, then leads to the Mediterranean and Caribbean zones. Special attention should be paid to the Indo-Pacific section, which houses an impressive 100,000-liter tank.

One of the main highlights of the exhibition is the jellyfish tunnel, which provides a 360-degree panoramic view. Here, you can spend hours watching the graceful movements of bioluminescent and vibrant jellyfish. Thrill-seekers will enjoy the giant shark tank, where 20 species of these predators live behind the glass. From different viewing levels, you can observe their powerful silhouettes in great detail.

At the end of your walk, be sure to visit the tropical greenhouse. This is a true oasis with exotic flora, where a small river with turtles flows amidst the greenery. In addition to the peaceful inhabitants, you can see dangerous piranhas and peculiar carnivorous plants, as well as encounter popular clownfish and bright angelfish.

Getting There

The attraction is located in the very heart of the city, directly across from the Old Port (Vieux-Port), making it extremely accessible for tourists. If you are staying in the central area, a pleasant walk along the waterfront will lead you right to the entrance of the complex.

For those traveling from more distant areas, it is convenient to use public transport or a taxi, which can be easily ordered from anywhere in the city or from the train station. The exact address is: ZAC de Beaulieu, Rue du 14 Juillet, 17138 Puilboreau. Car owners can use the GPS coordinates: 46.1766249°N, 1.1150533°W. Paid parking is available in the port area, but it is recommended to check maps for available spaces during the high season.

History & Facts

The history of this remarkable place began in 1970, when René Coutant decided to fulfill his dream and present a rich collection of marine life to the public. By 1988, at an international congress in Monaco, it was announced that the La Rochelle Aquarium had become one of the largest institutions of its kind in the entire country. At that time, it occupied an area of 1,600 square meters near the Les Minimes marina.

The founder's children, Roselyne and Pascal, continued their father's work, significantly expanding and modernizing the project. Due to immense public interest (seven million people visited the first building in 12 years), the decision was made to relocate. In 2001, a modern building opened in the city center, marking a symbol of a new chapter in the aquarium's history.

Since 2008, an important scientific initiative has been underway here—a satellite monitoring program for juvenile loggerhead sea turtles. Each turtle is implanted with an electronic chip before being released back into its natural habitat, allowing scientists to track their migration in the waters of the Bay of Biscay. This project is carried out in close cooperation with the Océanopolis aquarium in Brest.

Time Needed

It usually takes about 2 hours to explore all the exhibits. This is enough time to pass through all the thematic halls, watch the sharks, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the tropical greenhouse.

If you are traveling with children or prefer to study the information boards in detail, you should plan for a half-day visit. This will allow you to enjoy the interactive exhibitions without rushing and take beautiful photos of the underwater inhabitants.

Working Hours

The aquarium welcomes guests daily from Monday to Saturday: from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Please note that Sunday is a day off.

The operating schedule may change depending on the tourist season and public holidays, so it is highly recommended to check the current schedule on the institution's official website before your visit.
