As an important part of the defensive system in France, these moats stretch for 500 meters along the walls, which feature seven majestic towers. The contrast between the gray stone of the outer fortifications and the white tuff of the castle's inner buildings highlights the uniqueness of the architecture, which blends Gothic style with Renaissance elements. This site serves as a living testament to the region's rich history and its strategic role in the past.

Today, the moats are an open public space of the historical_place category, where locals and tourists can escape the city bustle. Since 1915, the castle has belonged to the city and serves as home to a history museum, while its well-kept moats have become one of the most recognizable photo spots, offering magnificent views of the ancient bastions and the old town.

What to Do

The main thing to do at the moats of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany is to take a leisurely walk along the bottom of the moat, which has been transformed into a beautiful garden. Here you can admire the detailed stonework of the towers, such as the Tower of the Golden Crown and the mighty Horseshoe Tower. The calm water and greenery create a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and contemplating 15th-century architecture.

This place is a true paradise for photography enthusiasts. Panoramic views of the castle walls look especially impressive at sunrise or sunset, when the stones take on a warm golden hue. You can also climb the city walls for a bird's-eye view of the moats and cityscapes, appreciating the scale of past defensive structures.

In the warmer months, cultural festivals and open-air exhibitions are often held on the grounds of the moats. It is also a popular spot for picnics: you can enjoy a small snack on the soft grass at the foot of the ancient walls while watching the birds. A visit to the moats is easily combined with a walk to the Machines of the Isle of Nantes or a visit to the Nantes History Museum, located inside the castle itself.

History & Facts

The history of this site began back in 1207, when Guy de Thouars founded the first castle at the base of the city's old Gallo-Roman wall. Over the centuries, the fortifications were expanded and rebuilt, but the moats of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany began to take on their most recognizable form in the second half of the 15th century. In 1466, Francis II, the last Duke of an independent Brittany, initiated the construction of a powerful fortress with deep moats to protect his residence from external threats.

The work to strengthen the castle was completed by his famous daughter, Anne of Brittany. It was during her time that the massive towers adapted for artillery fire were erected, and the moats were finally shaped and filled with water from the Loire River. These fortifications were intended to demonstrate the power of the Breton state in the face of the French crown.

After the union of Brittany with France in 1532, the castle lost its defensive significance and became a royal residence, and later a barracks and even a prison. In 1840, thanks to the initiative of the writer Prosper Mérimée, the entire complex was classified as a historic monument, saving it from destruction. Today, the moats are a unique monument of military architecture that has become part of the urban landscape.

Time Needed

If you plan to combine a walk by the moats with a visit to the courtyard and the Nantes History Museum itself, allow at least 3–4 hours for your visit.
