About

In the very heart of the cozy town of Heide rises one of the most remarkable buildings in the region — the Heide Water Tower. This majestic structure in the Neo-Romanesque style was built in 1903 and has since been an essential symbol of this part of Germany.

The tower is a massive brick construction standing nearly 46 meters tall, set on a solid granite base. Its architecture, designed by Wilhelm Vogt, resembles a medieval citadel thanks to the use of decorative arches and austere lines. The top of the building features a conical roof covered in patinated copper, which hides a former "Intze-type" water reservoir beneath it.

Today, this historical monument has been successfully adapted for modern needs. The interior of the tower houses office spaces, while the upper section has been converted into a wedding registry hall, making it a popular venue for romantic celebrations. Surrounded by a green city park, the tower serves as a wonderful example of how the technical heritage of the past finds a new life in a modern city.

What to Do

When you arrive at the tower, the first thing to do is take a walk through the adjacent city park. This is a great place for a quiet break, where you can admire the Neo-Romanesque brickwork in detail and take impressive photos against the historic facade. The tower is harmoniously integrated into the landscape, offering interesting angles for photography at any time of year.

Following its reconstruction, the interior space of the tower has gained new functionality. Although part of the premises is occupied by offices, visitors can appreciate the modern interior of the tower shaft, which features suspended ceilings and stylish lighting. One of the main highlights is the ability to ascend to the upper level via a modern elevator, making access to this historic height comfortable for every guest.

A special atmosphere can be felt in the hall located on the site of the former reservoir. Today, intimate wedding ceremonies and official marriage registrations are held here. If you manage to get inside during an event, be sure to notice the 16 additional windows added during the restoration — they offer a unique bird's-eye view of Heide's urban landscape.

Getting There

Finding this majestic structure is easy — it is located in the central part of the city at Österweide, 25746 Heide. The tower is situated northeast of the famous market square, within a shaded city park, and is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in the center.

If you are traveling by public transport, take a regional train to the city's main station — Heide (Holst) station. The attraction is about 1.5 km from the station, which can be covered in 15–20 minutes on foot or by using a local taxi, a trip that will take no more than 5 minutes.

For those traveling by car, follow the A23 autobahn (exit towards Heide). Parking areas are available both on the adjacent streets and in the lots near the central square, from where it is just a couple of minutes' walk to the park and tower. Its convenient location within the city makes it accessible by any mode of transport.

History & Facts

The history of this structure is closely linked to the public health of the townspeople. Following a typhoid epidemic in 1901 caused by the contamination of old wells, city authorities decided to create a modern water supply system. As a result, this monumental tower was erected in 1903, designed by architect Wilhelm Vogt.

For eight decades, the structure faithfully provided residents with clean water drawn from a depth of 60 meters. In 1978, the building was officially recognized as a cultural monument. However, by the end of the 1980s, the tower was no longer in use and began to gradually fall into disrepair due to issues with corrosion and condensation under the copper cladding.

The site experienced a rebirth between 2003 and 2005, when city authorities carried out a large-scale renovation. The reservoir area was updated, modern copper finishing was installed, and an elevator was added. Today, the renovated tower is a brilliant example of how an industrial past can be transformed into a functional space for offices and ceremonial occasions.

Time Needed

To view the architectural exterior of the tower and take a short walk through the surrounding park, 30–45 minutes is sufficient for most tourists. This time will allow you to capture great photos of the Neo-Romanesque facades and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the location.

If you plan to visit the interior during open events or are attending a wedding ceremony, you should set aside 1 to 1.5 hours for the visit. This will give you the opportunity to leisurely examine the interior details, take the elevator up to the former reservoir, and learn about the building's renovation history.

Working Hours

Viewing the attraction from the outside and walking through the surrounding park is possible daily and around the clock. This allows tourists to admire the tower's architecture both in daylight and in the evening when the building is illuminated.

As for visiting the interior spaces, such as the wedding hall or offices, access schedules depend on private arrangements or the schedule of official events. Visitors are recommended to check information on the city's website in advance or contact the administration if an indoor visit is planned.
