Imagine a majestic fortress crowning the top of Pitiki Hill, appearing to float above the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. Leros Castle (Panteli), also known as the Castle of the Virgin Mary (Kastro tis Panagias), is the most significant historical monument gracing the island of Leros. For centuries, this mighty citadel in Greece served as a reliable shield for locals, guarding the approaches to the natural harbors.

The fortress covers an area of about one hectare and is surrounded by three rows of massive walls. Thanks to its strategic location at an altitude of up to 200 meters, it offers visitors breathtaking panoramas of the east coast. Within the walls, Byzantine architecture and later fortifications erected by the Knights of St. John to protect against firearms coexist in harmony.
Special significance is given to the Temple of Panagia, located in the western part of the castle. This is not just a religious building, but a true spiritual symbol of the island. Here, you can see a unique carved iconostasis and ancient 16th-century icons, carefully preserved over the centuries. The combination of rugged fortification and sublime sanctity makes this site a must-visit for all lovers of history and architecture.
