How to get there: Introduction

By train

Since Skyros is an island, there is no direct railway connection, and it is impossible to get here exclusively by train. The railway network in Greece is developed primarily on the mainland, so this mode of transport can only be used as part of a combined route.

Travellers can take a train to Athens or Thessaloniki, enjoying views of the country from the carriage window. However, for the final stage of the journey to the island, a transfer to a bus to the port and a ferry, or a domestic flight, will still be required.

The city has no major railway stations. Nearest cities with rail connections:

By bus

Travelling by bus is a popular and budget-friendly way to reach the ferry crossing to the island. The main route for tourists runs through Athens, from where KTEL buses depart to the port of Kymi on the island of Evia. The trip takes about 3–3.5 hours and allows you to see the picturesque landscapes of the mainland and the coast.

The bus schedule is usually coordinated with the departure times of ferries to Skyros, making the transfer quite convenient. This is an excellent choice for those who are not in a hurry and want to immerse themselves in the rhythm of local life even before arriving at the resort.

By car

A trip by car provides freedom of movement and the ability to independently plan your travel schedule. To get to Skyros by car, you need to drive to the port of Kymi on the island of Evia, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The distance from Athens to the port is approximately 160–170 km, which will take about 2.5–3 hours of driving along scenic roads.

At the port, the vehicle will need to be loaded onto a ferry heading to the island (travel time by sea is about 1.5 hours). Having your own car on Skyros will be a huge advantage, allowing you to explore remote beaches and mountain villages at a pace convenient for you.

Travel tips

Preparing for a trip to Skyros will help make your holiday as comfortable and carefree as possible. This island has preserved its traditional way of life, so knowing local features will be very useful.

  1. Clothing and items. In summer, light clothing made of natural fabrics, swimwear, and comfortable shoes for walking along the cobbled streets of Chora are necessary. Evenings can be windy (the meltemi wind), so bring a light windbreaker or cardigan.
  2. Transport. Public transport runs infrequently, so to fully explore the island, it is recommended to rent a car or a scooter. This will give you freedom in choosing beaches.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Euro. Cards are accepted in large tavernas and shops, but always carry cash with you in small stalls and remote villages.
  4. Health. The island has a medical centre and pharmacies, mainly concentrated in the capital. The sun here is very active — be sure to use high SPF cream and wear a hat.
  5. Communication. The official language is Greek. In tourist zones, staff speak English, but a couple of phrases in Greek (for example, "Kalimera" — good morning) will bring a sincere smile to the locals.
  6. Local etiquette. Greeks are very hospitable but appreciate respect for traditions. When visiting monasteries and churches, shoulders and knees should be covered. Observe silence during the afternoon rest (siesta) from 14:30 to 17:00.
  7. What to avoid. Do not try to take "souvenirs" in the form of stones from archaeological excavations or rare plants with you — this is strictly prohibited and punishable by fines.
  8. Gastronomic advice. Be sure to try the local delicacy — lobster with spaghetti (astakomakaronada), for which the island is famous, as well as the traditional mizithra cheese.

Following these simple recommendations, you will be able to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Skyros and avoid minor troubles. The island opens up to those who travel with an open heart and respect for its culture.
