General Weather Overview

The climate in Flores can be described as hot and tropical, with high temperatures throughout the year. There is practically no cold weather here: even in the coolest months, December and January, the average temperature holds at a comfortable +24°C. This makes the town an attractive destination for travellers wishing to enjoy warmth at any time of year.

The weather here is clearly divided into dry and wet seasons. The period from February to May is characterised by minimal rainfall and the hottest weather: in April and May, the air can warm up to +37°C. This time is ideal for sun lovers, though one should be prepared for intense heat when visiting open-air attractions.

From June to October, Flores experiences a distinct rainy season. During these months, the number of days with precipitation increases significantly, peaking in September when it may rain almost daily. Despite the high humidity, air temperatures remain summery, around +28°C. Tourists are advised to carry raincoats during this period, as tropical downpours can be sudden and intense, but are often quickly replaced by sunshine.

Temperature

The climate in Flores is distinguished by consistently high temperatures year-round, making this town a true tropical paradise for heat lovers. The annual temperature chart shows that the hottest months are April and May. During this period, the average air temperature exceeds 30°C, and daytime highs often reach a sweltering 37°C. December and January can be tentatively called the coolest time of the year, yet even then, averages stay at a comfortable 24°C, allowing you to enjoy your holiday without warm clothing.

The summer period (June to August) is characterised by steady warmth: daytime temperatures range from 28°C to 33°C. This time can be described as hot, but without the extreme peaks typical of late spring. Winter in Flores is perhaps the most pleasant time for those who do not tolerate intense heat well. In the winter months, the weather becomes mild and comfortable: during the day, the air warms up to 28–31°C, creating ideal conditions for long excursions to ancient ruins and walks along Lake Petén Itzá.

Travellers should also take into account noticeable daily temperature fluctuations. The difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum is often more than 10 degrees. For example, in March and April, after the exhausting daytime heat near 35°C, pleasant night-time freshness sets in with temperatures around 22–23°C. In winter months, nights can even be slightly cool, with the thermometer dropping to 19–20°C, offering a great opportunity to rest from the daytime sun.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Flores has a strongly pronounced seasonal character, which is typical for the tropical climate of this region of Guatemala. There is a clear dry season here, lasting from February to April. The most favourable month for those wanting to avoid rain is considered to be March — at this time, rainfall happens extremely rarely, averaging only about 4 days for the whole month.

With the arrival of summer, the situation changes: the wet season begins, lasting roughly from June to October. During these months, rain becomes a constant companion for travellers. According to statistics, the wettest month is September, when about 27 days with precipitation are recorded. June, July, and August are also characterised by high humidity — it can rain 23–24 days a month.

In transitional months, such as November, December, and January, rain occurs less frequently than in summer but still happens regularly (from 11 to 15 days a month). Given that air temperatures in Flores remain high all year round, precipitation falls exclusively as warm tropical showers, which often bring pleasant freshness.

What to Pack

Flores features a warm tropical climate, so when packing your suitcase, you should rely on light and breathable clothing. Since air temperatures here remain high year-round, reaching peak values of 37°C in April and May, the foundation of your wardrobe should consist of items made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, light shirts, and summer dresses will ensure comfort even during the hottest hours. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat and high-quality sunglasses to protect against the bright sun.

If your trip is planned for the period from June to October, it is worth preparing for the wet season. During this time, the number of rainy days increases significantly (up to 27 days a month), so a light raincoat or a compact umbrella will become indispensable companions. Despite the precipitation, temperatures remain high, so clothing should be not only protective against moisture but also quick-drying. For evening walks, especially in the winter months (December and January) when night temperatures can drop to 20°C, it wouldn't hurt to bring a light windbreaker or a long-sleeved top.

Pay special attention to footwear selection: for walking on the cobblestones of Flores and trips to ancient ruins in the jungle, comfortable, broken-in trainers or sturdy trekking sandals are ideal. Also, considering the high humidity and tropical vegetation of the region, be sure to pack insect repellent and sunscreen with a high protection factor (SPF 50+) to protect your skin during long excursions.
