History & Facts

The history of this remarkable place began in 1969, when the Government of Bihar decided to establish a small collection of local animals for educational and conservation purposes. The park officially opened to the general public in 1973 and was named after the prominent political figure Sanjay Gandhi.

Over the decades, the park has systematically expanded. In the 1970s and 1980s, enclosures for rare species were added, and in 1993, the project received significant support from the Central Zoo Authority of India. This allowed for infrastructure modernization and the park's transformation into a full-fledged research center.

Special attention has always been given to breeding programs for endangered species. Patna Zoo is renowned for its success in conserving one-horned Indian rhinoceroses and Royal Bengal Tigers. Today, the park is considered the green lungs of the city and an important ecological hub for the country's eastern region.

In 2022, the park confirmed its high status by ranking 4th among the largest zoos in India. Having celebrated its 50th anniversary, the park continues to implement modern digital technologies, including online ticket sales and virtual tours, while remaining committed to its traditions of wildlife protection.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the enclosures, visit the botanical garden, and enjoy the tranquility by the lake, an average visitor will need between 2 to 4 hours. If you plan to visit the aquarium and the reptile house, allow a bit more time for your visit.

For families with children, we recommend setting aside about half a day (3–5 hours). This will give children plenty of time to play in the specialized play areas and calmly observe the animal feedings. Keep in mind that on weekends and holidays, the length of your stay may increase due to popularity and potential queues at ticket counters and popular attractions.

Working Hours

When planning your visit to the biological park, it is important to take its schedule into account. The zoo is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday. Please note that the park is closed on Mondays and Thursdays for maintenance and to allow the animals to rest.

The operating hours on open days are from 05:00 to 18:00. Early morning hours are particularly recommended for a visit, as animals are most active at this time, and the temperature remains comfortable for long walks.
