Among the majestic Himalayan forests rises Gorton Castle—a magnificent architectural monument built at the beginning of the 20th century. Located in the city of Shimla, this castle served for a long time as the administrative heart of the summer capital occupied by colonial India at that time. Today, it is recognized as one of the most recognizable historical landmarks in the region.

The building is striking in its scale and unusual style, which harmoniously blends Neo-Gothic and Scottish Baronial motifs. Constructed from the characteristic grey Sanjauli stone, the castle is topped with a vibrant red roof. Interestingly, the roof was originally tiled, but it was replaced with galvanized iron to protect it from the raids of the numerous local monkeys that frequent the surrounding hills.
Due to its hilltop location, Gorton Castle looks truly fairytale-like, resembling an old European estate suddenly transported to the midst of deodar cedars. Although the building is primarily used today for official purposes, it consistently attracts tourists with its austere beauty and rich past.
