General Weather Overview

The climate in Kendari can be described as typical equatorial tropical: eternal summer reigns here with high humidity and stable temperatures year-round. Thermometer readings hardly change from month to month, staying in a comfortable but hot range from +25°C to +28°C. Thanks to this, travellers need not worry about the cold — warm clothes will hardly be useful here.

There is no distinct change of seasons familiar to temperate latitudes in the city, but the year can be roughly divided into wetter and relatively dry periods. Most of the year, especially from November to July, is characterized by frequent precipitation: rains can occur almost daily, refreshing the air and supporting the lush tropical greenery.

The most favourable time for those who want to catch more sunny days is considered the period from August to October. During these months, the number of rainy days decreases noticeably, although the probability of precipitation cannot be completely ruled out. In general, when going to Kendari, it is worth being prepared for warm but changeable weather, where bright sunshine can quickly be replaced by a short-term tropical downpour.

Temperature

Kendari, located in the tropical belt of Indonesia, is distinguished by an amazingly stable temperature regime throughout the year. There are no sharp seasonal contrasts familiar to temperate latitudes: the average annual temperature fluctuates smoothly in the range from 25°C to 28°C. The hottest period is traditionally considered the months from November to January, when average figures stay at the level of 27.5°C, and the daily maximum often reaches almost 30°C.

The period from June to August can conditionally be called the local "winter", although the weather remains summer-warm. In these months it becomes a little fresher: the average temperature drops to a comfortable 25.5°C. This time of year is often perceived by tourists as the most pleasant for active walks, as there is no exhausting heat characteristic of hotter months.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Kendari are minimal. The difference between the daytime heat and the night-time cool is usually only about 4-5 degrees. Even on the "coldest" nights of July and August, the thermometer rarely drops below 23.6°C, so you will hardly need warm clothes on your trip. Such an even climate allows you to enjoy your holiday at any time of the day.

Precipitation

The climate of Kendari is characterized by high humidity and regular precipitation throughout the year, which is typical for the tropical latitudes of Indonesia. Since the city is located in the equatorial zone, there is no snow here — precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rain. Even during periods that are considered drier, the sky is often overcast with clouds, and short-term downpours are a common occurrence.

The wettest period, judging by the frequency of rains, lasts from November to July. At this time, the number of days with precipitation stays at a very high level: for example, in March, it can rain almost daily (up to 31 rainy days). June also stands out against the general background, showing the largest volume of rainfall in millimetres among all months of the year.

A relative decrease in rain activity is observed from August to October. The "driest" month can be called September, when the number of rainy days decreases to 16, and the volume of precipitation falls to a minimum. Nevertheless, even in this season, tourists are recommended to have an umbrella or raincoat with them, as there are practically no completely dry months in Kendari.

What to Pack

Since a hot and humid tropical climate reigns in Kendari all year round with an average temperature of about +26...+27°C, light summer clothing should form the basis of your wardrobe. Give preference to items made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton, linen, or viscose, which will help you tolerate the heat more easily. T-shirts, shorts, loose shirts, and light dresses will be the best choice. Considering that the temperature at night practically does not drop below +23°C, you will hardly need warm clothes, perhaps just a light cardigan for protection against air conditioners in buildings or transport.

Particular attention should be paid to protection from rain. According to statistics, precipitation in Kendari falls very frequently: even in the "driest" months (August, September), the number of rainy days ranges from 16 to 20, and during the rest of the year, it can rain almost daily. Therefore, be sure to put a compact but sturdy umbrella or a high-quality raincoat poncho in your suitcase. Footwear should be as comfortable as possible for walking and, preferably, quick-drying or water-resistant — trekking sandals or light sneakers made of synthetic materials are ideal.

Despite the high cloudiness and frequent rains, the sun in this region is very active. Do not forget to take sunscreen with a high protection factor (SPF 50+), sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Also, insects can be active in the tropical climate of Indonesia, so having repellent will make your evening walks much more comfortable. If you are planning an active holiday, pack a small first aid kit and a waterproof case for your phone and documents.
