Overview

Singkawang welcomes travelers with a classic equatorial climate, characterized by stable and warm weather all year round. Eternal summer reigns here: the average air temperature remains almost unchanged from month to month, staying at a comfortable level of around 26–27°C. While the heat is rarely extreme, high humidity is a constant companion, creating a true tropical atmosphere.

There is no pronounced change of seasons typical of temperate latitudes in this region. Instead of cold winters and hot summers, the year is divided into wetter and relatively drier periods, although rain is possible at any time. The highest amount of rainfall and cloudy days usually occurs during the season from November to January, when the number of rainy days reaches its peak.

Even in the "driest" months, such as July or February, the probability of precipitation remains high, so sunny weather can suddenly give way to a brief tropical downpour. Thanks to this abundance of moisture, the nature surrounding the city always stays lush and green. Tourists are recommended to always carry a raincoat or umbrella, while enjoying the opportunity to wear light summer clothes in any month of the year.

Temperature

Singkawang, located near the equator, features a remarkably stable temperature regime throughout the year. There is practically no usual division into four seasons: the variation in average temperature between the "coldest" and hottest month is only about one degree. The highest figures are recorded in May, when the average temperature reaches 27.6°C and daytime highs approach 29.6°C. During this period, as well as in April and June, the weather feels consistently hot and humid.

The conventional "winter" season, falling in December and January, brings only a symbolic drop in temperature. In January, the average figure is 26.4°C, which feels little different from the rest of the year. Even in these months, daytime temperatures steadily hold at 28°C, so the concept of cold is quite relative here. The climate remains mild and warm without sudden cold snaps, making the city comfortable to visit year-round.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is the minimal diurnal temperature range. The difference between daytime heat and nighttime coolness is very small — usually only 3–4 degrees. For example, if the air warms up to 29°C during the day, the temperature rarely drops below 25°C at night. Thanks to this, evenings and nights in Singkawang remain very warm, and tourists are unlikely to need warm clothes even for walks after sunset.

Precipitation

Singkawang is characterized by a humid tropical climate, with rainfall occurring fairly regularly throughout the year. It is difficult to distinguish a clearly defined dry season, as rain remains a frequent occurrence even in the "calmest" months. Travelers should be prepared for high humidity and changeable weather regardless of their trip dates.

The rainiest period lasts from October to January. The peak frequency of precipitation occurs in December, when a record number of rainy days is recorded — about 29 per month. November and January are also characterized by high humidity (28 rainy days), and the volume of rainfall during this time reaches its annual highs.

A relative decrease in rainfall activity is observed in February and mid-summer. July is considered one of the "driest" months, although even then, statistics show about 18 days with precipitation. February also offers a bit of a respite with 19 rainy days and the minimum volume of precipitation for the year. Nevertheless, even during these periods, it is recommended to have an umbrella or raincoat with you, as tropical downpours can start suddenly.

Packing Tips

Since Singkawang enjoys a hot tropical climate with stable temperatures around +26...+28°C throughout the year, the core of your luggage should consist of light and breathable items. Opt for clothes made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen, which provide comfort in high humidity. Shorts, T-shirts, and summer sundresses will be very useful, but for visiting the city's many temples, it is worth bringing clothes that cover the shoulders and knees.

According to statistics, rain is a very common occurrence in any season: the number of rainy days varies from 18 to 29 per month. It is particularly wet from November to January, so a high-quality raincoat or a light waterproof windbreaker is a must in your suitcase. An umbrella will also come in handy, but a poncho is more convenient for long walks. Choose shoes that are as comfortable, non-slip, and quick-drying as possible, such as trekking sandals or light sneakers.

Don't forget sun protection: even in cloudy weather, UV rays are very active at these latitudes. Be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Additionally, in Indonesia's tropical climate, insect repellent for evening walks won't go amiss. You'll unlikely need warm clothes outdoors, but a light sweater might be useful for transport or in buildings with powerful air conditioning.
