History & Facts

The history of this site began in 1870 with the founding of the Sriwedari Zoo, also known as Bon Rojo or "the Royal Garden." It was established at the initiative of Ruler Paku Buono X in the heart of the city and served as a retreat for the royal family for many years.

After 1939, the zoo fell into decline, but in 1986, the Surakarta city government decided to give it a new lease on life. The animal collection was moved to a spacious area in the Jurug district, and the revamped institution was named Taman Satwa Taru Jurug (TSTJ).

Since then, the park has become an enduring symbol of the city of Solo. Thanks to its location on a major transport route and its dedicated conservation efforts, it has transformed from a modest garden into one of the most famous tourist sites on the island of Java.

Time Needed

To fully see the zoo's inhabitants and enjoy a walk in the shade of the trees, you will typically need 2 to 4 hours. This is the optimal time to explore the entire area and visit the main recreation zones without rushing.

If you plan to watch a cultural show or spend extra time at the playgrounds and rides, we recommend setting aside a half-day for your visit. It is best to arrive in the morning when the animals are most active and the temperature is still comfortable for walking outdoors.

Working Hours

Official opening hours for Jurug Park may vary, so visitors are strongly encouraged to check for current information on the official website or via tourism portals before their trip.

Usually, such parks in Indonesia are open during daylight hours, but the schedule may be extended during cultural festivals or special events. Up-to-date information is also frequently updated on Google Maps.
