General Weather Overview

The climate in Tabriz, located in Iran, is characterized as continental, with four distinct seasons. Visitors should expect significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, which is typical for this type of climate.

Summer in Tabriz (June-August) is hot and very dry. Average temperatures in July and August reach 23-23.5°C, while maximums can rise above 30°C. Precipitation is practically absent during the summer months. Winter (December-February), on the other hand, is cold, with average temperatures below freezing (January -3.0°C) and night frosts. A small amount of precipitation falls during the winter months, with about 7-9 wet days per month observed.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons. In spring, the temperature gradually rises, reaching comfortable values by May (average temperature 14.3°C). March and April are the wettest months, although the total amount of rainfall remains low (2 mm). In autumn, the weather becomes cooler, with a decrease in precipitation after the summer drought. Overall, Tabriz is distinguished by a low amount of precipitation throughout the year, giving the climate arid characteristics, especially during the summer period.

Temperature

The climate in Tabriz is characterized by significant seasonal temperature variations. The coldest months are January, with an average temperature of about -3.0°C (minimum -7.5°C, maximum 1.6°C), and February, where the average temperature is -0.5°C (minimum -5.3°C, maximum 4.3°C). Winters here are frosty, especially at night when the temperature regularly drops below freezing.

Summer in Tabriz, by contrast, is hot and dry. The warmest months are July (average temperature 23.5°C, maximum up to 31.1°C) and August (average temperature 23.0°C, maximum up to 30.8°C). June is also very warm, with an average temperature of 20.7°C and maximum values reaching 28.3°C. The summer months are characterized by a significant difference between day and night temperatures: days can be sultry, while nights bring pleasant coolness. For example, in July, the difference between the average minimum (15.9°C) and average maximum (31.1°C) temperature is more than 15 degrees.

Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with moderate temperatures. In March, the average temperature rises to 4.6°C, and by May it reaches 14.3°C. In autumn, the temperature gradually decreases: in September the average temperature is a comfortable 19.1°C, in October it is 12.4°C, and in November it drops to 5.4°C, heralding the arrival of winter. Noticeable daily temperature fluctuations are also observed during these periods, which is worth considering when planning a trip and choosing clothes.

Precipitation

In Tabriz, there is a clearly defined seasonality of precipitation, although the total annual amount is small. The city is characterized by a dry summer and a period with more frequent, yet still scanty, precipitation during the cold season and spring. Overall, Tabriz receives very little precipitation throughout the year, and even in the "wettest" months, the volume is minimal.

The driest period falls on the summer months. From June to September, there is practically no precipitation (0 mm), and the number of days with precipitation ranges from 1 to 4. August and September are the driest, when the probability of rain is minimal. This distinctly dry season makes summer in Tabriz very sunny and hot.

The period with the highest probability of precipitation lasts from late winter to late spring. March stands out as the month with the highest number of days with precipitation – on average 15 days, although the total amount of precipitation is only 2 mm. April and May also bring about 2 mm of precipitation, distributed over 12-13 days. Winter months, such as January and February, also have about 9 days with precipitation, but the volume is 1-2 mm. Given the average and minimum temperatures in January (-3.0°C, -7.5°C), February (-0.5°C, -5.3°C), and December (0.7°C, -3.7°C), precipitation in these months most likely falls as snow. In transitional months, like March and November, both rain and wet snow or snow are possible.

In autumn, in October and November, the amount of precipitation remains low (1 mm), with October seeing about 5 days with precipitation, and November about 6. Thus, although one can distinguish "wetter" and "drier" periods in Tabriz by the frequency of precipitation, its intensity remains low throughout the year.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Tabriz, it is important to consider the significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The key to packing your suitcase will be the principle of layering clothes, which will allow you to feel comfortable both in the cool morning and evening hours and during the warm days. Regardless of the season, be sure to take comfortable shoes for long walks around the city, as you will be doing a lot of walking while sightseeing.

For the summer months (June to September), when the average temperature holds steadily above +20°C, and the maximum can reach +31°C, with practically no precipitation, pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. Do not forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for protection against the bright sun. In late spring (May) and early autumn (October), the weather is also predominantly warm, but evenings can be cool, so a light jacket, cardigan, or windbreaker will be very handy. During these transitional periods, as well as in April, when the number of rainy days increases (up to 12-13 days per month), a compact umbrella or a light raincoat may be useful, despite the small overall amount of precipitation.

Winter in Tabriz (December to February) is quite cold: the average temperature hovers around 0°C, and night frosts can drop to -7.5°C. You will need warm items: thermal underwear, sweaters, fleece clothing, an insulated windproof jacket, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Although the total amount of precipitation is small (1-2 mm per month), there are 7 to 15 days with precipitation in the winter months and March (likely in the form of snow or wet snow in winter), so waterproof outerwear and shoes will be very useful. Early spring (March) and late autumn (November) also require warm clothing, as temperatures remain quite low, and windy weather can feel significantly colder.
