General Weather Overview

The climate in Ischia, located in Italy, can be described as typically Mediterranean. This means the island enjoys mild, relatively wet winters and hot, dry summers. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are moderate, making Ischia an attractive destination for holidays in different seasons, albeit with notable differences in rainfall.

Ischia has two clearly defined main seasons. Summer, especially from June to August, is very warm and sunny, with average temperatures rising above 22°C and peaking in July-August (around 26°C). During this period, rainfall is minimal, and the number of rainy days is low, creating ideal conditions for a beach holiday. Winter, from December to February, is mild, with average temperatures around 10-12°C, and is characterized by higher rainfall and cloudy days, particularly in November, which is the wettest month.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) are transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures and moderate rainfall. During these periods, the weather is pleasant for excursions and active leisure, although the likelihood of rain is higher than in summer. The driest months are July and August, when precipitation is practically non-existent.

Temperature

The climate in Ischia is characterized by noticeable seasonal temperature changes, offering diverse conditions for visitors throughout the year. The hottest months are undoubtedly July and August, when the average air temperature is 25.9°C and 26.3°C respectively. During these summer peaks, maximum daytime temperatures regularly reach 28.3°C - 28.6°C. On the other hand, the coolest months are January and February. During this period, the average temperature holds at 10.9°C - 11.2°C, and minimum night-time values drop to 9.0°C - 9.1°C, indicating a mild winter.

The summer months in Ischia, from June to August, bring true Mediterranean warmth. June begins the season with an average temperature of 22.7°C (minimum 20.3°C, maximum 25.2°C), creating very comfortable conditions. The heat builds up in July (averaging 25.9°C) and reaches its peak in August (averaging 26.3°C). Daytime temperatures at the height of summer often fluctuate in the 28-29°C range, which is ideal for beach holidays and boat trips. Nights also remain very warm, with temperatures rarely falling below 23°C in July and August. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer is approximately 4-5°C, providing pleasant warmth even in the evening.

The winter period in Ischia, covering December, January, and February, is distinguished by its mildness and absence of severe cold. Average monthly temperatures vary from 10.9°C in January to 12.5°C in December. During the day, the air warms up on average to 12.7°C - 14.3°C, while at night the temperature usually does not drop below 9°C - 11°C. This creates cool but quite comfortable weather for walking and sightseeing. Diurnal temperature fluctuations in winter are less significant than in summer, amounting to about 3-4 degrees. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with gradual warming or cooling, offering pleasant weather for those who prefer to avoid the summer heat or winter chill.

Precipitation

The climate in Ischia is typically Mediterranean, which means a clear division of the year into dry and wet seasons. The main type of precipitation here is rain. Thanks to mild winters, when the average monthly air temperature consistently stays significantly above zero (for example, in January the minimum average temperature is 9.1°C, and the average is 10.9°C), snowfall on Ischia is an extremely rare, almost exceptional phenomenon.

The summer months gift Ischia with the driest period, ideal for lovers of sunny weather and beach holidays. July and August stand out in particular: at this time there is practically no precipitation (0 mm), and the number of rainy days is minimal – just 2 and 3 days respectively. June also pleases with a small amount of precipitation (1 mm) and only four rainy days on average, preceding the peak of the dry season.

With the arrival of autumn and winter, wetter weather comes to Ischia. The highest amount of precipitation falls in November – on average 9 mm, and it can rain up to 16 days a month, making it the wettest month of the year. It is followed by December, bringing 5 mm of precipitation and approximately 14 rainy days, and January with figures of 4 mm of precipitation and 13 rainy days. Spring months, such as March (3 mm of precipitation, 12 rainy days) and April (2 mm, 9 days), as well as early autumn represented by September (4 mm, 9 days) and October (3 mm, 10 days), are characterized by a moderate amount of rain, serving as transitional periods between the dry summer and wet winter.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Ischia, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. In summer, from June to August, hot and sunny weather prevails on the island. The basis of your luggage should consist of light, breathable fabrics, swimwear, a hat for sun protection, sunglasses, and, of course, high SPF sunscreen. Even in the warmest months, evenings can bring a slight chill, so a thin cardigan or shawl will be very useful. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity for exploring the picturesque streets of Ischia.

In spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), the weather in Ischia is very pleasant but can be changeable. During these periods, the principle of layering works best: T-shirts that can be complemented with a light sweater or cardigan, and a windbreaker or light jacket. In winter, from November to March, the air temperature is cooler, averaging +10°C to +15°C. You will need warm sweaters, a mid-season jacket, and possibly a scarf and hat. Although heavy precipitation is not characteristic of Ischia, the highest number of rainy days falls in the period from November to March. Therefore, a light folding umbrella or raincoat is worth taking with you, especially if your trip is planned for these months, but it can also prove useful in the off-season.
