General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of La Spezia is typically Mediterranean, with distinct seasons. It is characterized by warm, and sometimes hot, sunny summers and mild, wetter winters. Thanks to these weather conditions, the city is attractive to visit at different times of the year, although impressions of the trip will depend heavily on the chosen month.

The summer period, from June to August, is the warmest and driest. The average temperature at this time rises to 23°C, and precipitation is minimal, making it ideal for beach holidays and boat trips. Winter, from December to February, is quite mild, with an average temperature of about 6-7°C, but with a noticeable increase in the number of rainy days. Spring and autumn are comfortable shoulder seasons with moderate temperatures, although one should be prepared for precipitation, especially in October, November, and May.

Temperature

The climate in La Spezia is characterized by warm but not stifling summers and mild, cool winters, which is typical for this region of Italy. The coldest months of the year are January and December, when the average temperature hovers around 6-7°C. At night, the thermometer can drop to 3-4°C, but frosts here are very rare. The peak heat occurs in July and August, when the average temperature reaches a comfortable 23°C, and daytime highs regularly rise to 26-27°C, creating excellent conditions for a seaside holiday.

The summer period in La Spezia is very pleasant. Daytime heat is softened by the sea breeze, and evenings remain warm, with temperatures around 19-20°C, which is ideal for walks around the city. Winters here are humid and cool, but without severe frosts — during the day the temperature usually stays within 9-13°C. Spring and autumn offer perhaps the most comfortable weather for excursions: the temperature gradually rises from 12°C in March to 19°C in September, creating ideal conditions for exploring the city and its surroundings.

Daily temperature fluctuations in the city are moderate throughout the year. The difference between day and night readings usually does not exceed 5-8 degrees. This means that even on the hottest summer days, nights bring refreshing coolness, and in winter there are no sharp drops in temperature after sunset. Overall, the temperature regime makes La Spezia attractive to visit at almost any time of the year, especially for travelers who prefer to avoid both extreme heat and severe cold.

Precipitation

In the city of La Spezia, a typical Mediterranean climate is observed with distinct wet and dry seasons. The distribution of precipitation throughout the year is uneven: most of it falls in the autumn-winter period, while summer is generally very dry. This is an important factor for trip planning, as the choice of season will directly affect your holiday impressions.

The driest period is mid-summer. In July, the minimum amount of precipitation for the entire year falls — only about 1 mm, and there are on average no more than seven rainy days. June and August are also characterized by dry weather, making them ideal for beach holidays and walks. Conversely, the wet season begins in autumn and reaches its peak in October, when the highest volume of precipitation is recorded — about 7 mm. It is followed by November and December, which are also very rainy months.

Interestingly, the frequency and intensity of rains vary. For example, December and May lead in the number of days with precipitation (about 16), but in May the volume of rain is small, suggesting frequent but likely light and short-term precipitation. Autumn rains, on the contrary, can be heavier and more prolonged. Given the mild winter temperatures, which rarely drop to freezing, precipitation in La Spezia almost always falls as rain, and snow is an exceptional rarity.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to La Spezia, first of all, ensure you have comfortable shoes. You will have to walk a lot on the cobbled streets of the city and, possibly, along the picturesque trails of the neighboring Cinque Terre region. In the summer months, from June to August, the weather here is warm and sunny. You should put light clothing in your suitcase: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and, of course, swimwear. Don't forget about sun protection — sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses will be indispensable. Evenings by the sea can be fresh, so bring a light cardigan or windbreaker with you.

In spring and autumn, the weather in La Spezia is changeable, so the layering principle will be the best strategy. A combination of t-shirts, sweaters, and a light jacket will allow you to feel comfortable throughout the day. In winter, from December to February, it gets cool and damp. You will need a warm waterproof jacket, sweaters, a scarf, and a hat. Considering that rainy days happen here all year round, especially often from October to May, a compact umbrella or raincoat will become your faithful companion at any time of the year and help you not to cancel plans due to a sudden downpour.
