Weather Overview

The city of Kochi, located in Japan, is characterized by a humid subtropical climate. This means that there are four distinct seasons here, with noticeable fluctuations in temperature and precipitation levels throughout the year. Overall, the weather offers variety, ranging from cool winters to hot and humid summers.

Winters in Kochi (from December to February) are quite mild, with average temperatures around 4-6°C, and this is the driest period of the year. Spring (from March to May) brings gradual warming, with average temperatures rising from 9°C to 17°C, while rainfall increases. Summer (from June to August) is the hottest and most humid time of the year. Average temperatures reach 21-26°C, and sometimes higher. Autumn (from September to November) starts off warm, with temperatures around 23°C, and gradually becomes cooler, approaching 12°C in November, while precipitation also decreases.

One of the key features of Kochi's climate is the pronounced rainy season, which falls during the summer months. The highest amount of rainfall and rainy days is observed from June to September, peaking in July, when about 14 mm of precipitation falls and there are up to 24 rainy days. Therefore, when planning a trip, it is worth considering this factor, especially if you prefer drier weather for outdoor activities.

Temperature

The city of Kochi experiences a distinct change of seasons with noticeable temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature is around 4.5°C, and nightly lows can drop to 0.9°C, approaching the freezing point. Daily highs in January usually do not exceed 8.1°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in August, which is the warmest month with an average temperature of 26.2°C. In August, daytime temperatures often reach 29.2°C, while nights remain very warm, with lows around 23.1°C.

The summer months in Kochi, especially July and August, are characterized as hot and likely humid, given the high number of days with precipitation during this period. Average daytime temperatures during this time confidently stay above 24°C, reaching almost 30°C in August. Winter, covering December, January, and February, brings cool weather. Average temperatures range from 4.5°C to 6.0°C. Although severe frosts are atypical, night temperatures in January and February can be close to zero, making these months quite cold.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) months represent transitional periods with more moderate temperatures. In spring, the temperature gradually rises from an average of 9.6°C in March to 17.4°C in May. In autumn, a gradual cooling occurs: from 23.1°C in September to 11.9°C in November. Daily temperature fluctuations in Kochi are noticeable, especially in the spring and autumn months, when the difference between daily highs and nightly lows can be around 8-9°C. In summer, this difference is somewhat smaller, around 6-7°C, indicating warm nights.

Precipitation

In the city of Kochi, noticeable seasonal fluctuations in precipitation distribution are observed throughout the year. The wettest period falls on the summer months, while winter is characterized by significantly less rainfall. The rainiest month is usually July, while the driest are December and January.

The summer season, especially from June to September, brings the bulk of annual rainfall to Kochi. In July, an average of 14 mm of precipitation falls, and it rains for approximately 24 days per month. June is also quite wet with 12 mm of precipitation and 18 rainy days, while August and September bring 10-11 mm of precipitation with 20-22 rainy days. At this time of year, rains can be frequent and sometimes intense, which is typical for the summer season in the region.

Winter months, on the contrary, are distinguished by their dryness. In December and January, a minimal amount of precipitation falls – only about 2 mm in each, with December having the lowest number of days with precipitation (about 6). November is also relatively dry (3 mm of precipitation, 9 wet days). Precipitation in winter, if it happens, is usually insignificant, most often in the form of light rain or drizzle. Although average minimum temperatures in January (0.9°C) and December (2.5°C) approach the freezing point, heavy snowfall is unlikely due to the low overall level of precipitation.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Kochi, it is important to consider the changeable weather throughout the year so that your luggage is packed correctly. The key principle is layering your clothes, as this will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion, as Kochi and its surroundings are perfect for long walks. Do not forget a small backpack for daily excursions, where you can put a water bottle, a map, and other small items.

In winter (from December to February), it is quite cool in Kochi, with the average temperature ranging from 4.5°C to 6°C, and nightly lows can drop almost to zero. You will need warm items: sweaters, fleece tops, a warm jacket (preferably windproof and waterproof, as precipitation is possible), a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Spring (from March to May) and autumn (from September to November) are characterized by milder weather but still require foresight. During the day, the temperature can be comfortable (from 9.6°C to 17.4°C in spring and from 11.9°C to 23.1°C in autumn), but evenings can be cool. A light jacket, cardigan, jeans, or thick trousers will be appropriate. An umbrella or a light raincoat will also come in handy, as the number of rainy days increases, especially in late spring and early autumn.

Summer in Kochi (from June to August) is warm and humid, with average temperatures from 21°C to 26.2°C. This period is also the rainiest, especially July and August, when the number of days with precipitation reaches 22-24 per month. Therefore, light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen), shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses are your main choice. Be sure to take a reliable umbrella or a quality raincoat with you. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are also necessary for sun protection on clear days. Given the high humidity and frequent rains, quick-drying clothing can be very practical.
