How to get to Atbasar

How to get there: Introduction

Atbasar is a distinctive city in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan, situated amidst vast steppe expanses on the banks of the Zhabay River. It is not a bustling metropolis, but an important transport hub and district centre that preserves the atmosphere of tranquil regional life.

You can reach this destination in various ways, most often by combining a flight with a car journey or by using ground transport from neighbouring major cities. A trip to Atbasar will be an interesting experience for those who wish to see the authentic, non-tourist side of the country.

An option to fly via Petropavlovsk is also possible, although it is located significantly further away — at a distance of 344 km. Upon arrival at any of these airports, the remainder of the journey to Atbasar must be covered by ground transport.

Before travelling to Atbasar, it is worth considering several important nuances characteristic of small cities in the region to ensure your journey is as comfortable as possible.

  1. Clothing and Climate. A sharp continental climate prevails here. In winter, very warm, windproof clothing is essential due to strong steppe winds, while in summer, a head covering and light clothing will be useful as it can get quite hot.
  2. Transport in the City. The city is small, so it is convenient to move around the centre on foot. For trips to remote areas, it is better to use local taxis, which are inexpensive.
  3. Cash. Be sure to carry cash in Tenge (small denominations). Cards are accepted in supermarkets, but in small shops, at the market, or in taxis, payment is usually cash-only.
  4. Language Barrier. Russian is widely spoken and understood by the majority of locals. Knowing a few greeting phrases in the Kazakh language will be received with great respect.
  5. Connectivity and Internet. Mobile internet works stably within the city limits, but the signal may drop on highways between cities. It is recommended to download offline maps in advance.
  6. Dining. Do not miss the opportunity to try local cuisine in small cafes. Portions here are usually generous, and the food is hearty and delicious, with an emphasis on meat dishes.
