How to get to Zhairem

The settlement of Zhairem is situated in the very heart of the endless steppes, representing a significant point on the map of the central region for which Kazakhstan is renowned. When planning how to reach Zhairem, travellers most often pursue business objectives or seek to experience the unique atmosphere of industrial towns. One can arrive here via various routes, utilizing a combination of air travel to neighbouring regional centres followed by a journey via ground transport.

Since the settlement of Zhairem itself lacks its own airport, air travel involves flying to one of the nearest cities. The most convenient option is considered to be arriving in Zhezkazgan, located approximately 192 km away, as it is the closest point with regular air connections.

Alternative routes could be flights to the airport of the city of Karaganda or to the capital — Astana. These transport hubs receive more international and domestic flights, offering greater flexibility when planning your trip, although they will require a longer transfer.

Railway connection is one of the most reliable ways to reach the destination: the Zhairem station operates within the settlement, through which passenger trains pass. You can arrive here via a direct service following the route from the city of Astana to Zhezkazgan, or choose trains departing from Karaganda.

A journey by train allows one to comfortably observe the changing landscapes of the steppe, making travel across a country such as Kazakhstan particularly atmospheric. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, especially during the holiday season and public holidays.

At the moment, precise information regarding direct scheduled buses to the settlement may be absent from online timetables, yet bus services in the region are developed. Travellers should focus on bus stations in the cities of Zhezkazgan and Karaganda, from where intercity routes regularly depart towards industrial centres.

Often, local residents and tourists utilise the services of private carriers or shared taxis that shuttle between populated areas. It is best to clarify travel time and fare costs on the spot at bus station ticket offices or with drivers.

A trip by car allows you to independently appreciate the scale of the Kazakh steppe and not depend on transport schedules. The shortest route leads from the city of Zhezkazgan: the distance is about 209 km, which will take approximately 3.5 hours on the road along steppe highways.

The road from the city of Karaganda is longer — about 356 km, which will require around 4.5–5 hours to cover. If you are departing from the capital, the city of Astana, prepare for a long journey: the actual route via Karaganda will be about 570–600 km, requiring at least 7–8 hours behind the wheel.

A trip to Zhairem requires certain preparation, considering the specific location and the sharply continental climate of the region. To ensure your journey is comfortable, please pay attention to the following recommendations:

1. Seasonal Clothing. The climate here is harsh: summers can be very hot and dusty, while winters are freezing with strong winds. Be sure to bring headwear and a windproof jacket.
