General Weather Overview

Liepaja, located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, is characterized by a temperate maritime climate. The proximity to a large body of water plays a decisive role in shaping the weather: there is no extreme heat here in summer, and winters are significantly milder than in the interior of the continent. This city is often called the place "where the wind is born", so a fresh sea breeze will be your constant companion at any time of the year.

Summer here is comfortable and refreshing, with average temperatures around 18–21°C, which is ideal for those who do not tolerate the heat well. The warmest months are traditionally July and August. Winter in Liepaja is usually mild, with temperatures hovering around 0°C – +2°C; however, due to high humidity and winds, it may feel cooler outdoors than the thermometer indicates.

Travellers should note that the weather in Liepaja is quite changeable. Precipitation falls regularly throughout the year: even in the driest spring months, there are about 8–11 rainy days, and in autumn and winter, this number rises to 15–17 days per month. We recommend always carrying a comfortable windbreaker or an umbrella so that short-term rains do not interfere with your walks.

Temperature

The climate of Liepaja is largely determined by the proximity of the Baltic Sea, making the temperature regime moderate and devoid of sharp extremes. The coldest months of the year are traditionally January and February, when the average temperature fluctuates around 0...+1°C, dropping to slight sub-zero values at night. Winter here is mild rather than frosty, but travellers should consider the influence of the wind, which can make it feel chilly even when the thermometer reads zero.

The summer season in Liepaja is perfect for those who cannot stand exhausting heat. The warmest months — July and August — delight with comfortable figures: during the day, the air warms up on average to +20...+21°C, creating conditions for a pleasant "Baltic" holiday. This is a time of gentle warmth when you can enjoy long walks without the risk of overheating, while the nights remain sufficiently warm, only 3-4 degrees cooler than daytime temperatures.

A characteristic feature of the local climate is the small range of daily temperature variations. Thanks to the influence of the sea, the difference between daily highs and nightly lows remains insignificant throughout the year, rarely exceeding 3-5 degrees. This ensures a stable temperature background, although in autumn and spring, the weather can change quite dynamically under the influence of marine cyclones.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Liepaja is distributed quite unevenly throughout the year, but travellers should be prepared for the changeable weather of the Baltic coast. Winter months, especially December and January, are distinguished by the highest frequency of precipitation: up to 17 wet days per month are recorded during this time. Given average temperatures hovering around 0°C...+1°C, snow or sleet often falls here in winter, which can turn into rain due to the maritime influence.

Spring brings noticeable relief and is considered the driest season of the year. April is statistically the least rainy month, when the number of days with precipitation drops to 8. May also pleases with relatively dry weather, making the end of spring an excellent time for walking around the city and the coast without the constant need to hide under shelters.

In summer and autumn, humidity rises again. In July and August, despite the comfortable air temperature, the number of rainy days increases to 14 per month. The situation is similar in autumn: October almost catches up with winter figures in terms of precipitation frequency (about 16 days). Therefore, when planning a trip to Latvia in the second half of the year, be sure to take a waterproof jacket or a reliable umbrella with you.

What to Pack

Liepaja is often called the "city where the wind is born", so the main rule when packing your suitcase will be the principle of layering. Regardless of the season, the weather on the Baltic coast can be changeable and windy. Even in summer, a fresh sea breeze may require a light windbreaker or a cosy sweater for evening promenades, so be sure to bring clothes that can be easily combined, adding or removing layers as needed.

For a trip during the cold season (from late autumn to early spring), it is worth preparing thoroughly. The average temperature in winter holds around zero, but due to high humidity and wind, the cold is felt more intensely. You will need a windproof jacket, a warm hat, a scarf, and gloves. Given the frequent precipitation (up to 17 rainy days in winter months), give preference to waterproof footwear with thick soles. An umbrella here often proves useless due to strong gusts of wind, so a high-quality raincoat will be a much more practical choice.

Summer in Liepaja is mild and comfortable, with temperatures around +18...+20°C, which is ideal for active holidays. Be sure to take comfortable shoes for long walks, as you will want to explore both the white sand beach and the city streets. Do not forget swimming gear, sunglasses, and sun cream — the sun by the water can be intense. However, even in July and August, rains are possible, so light water-repellent clothing in your luggage will certainly not be superfluous.
