General Weather Conditions

Huatulco welcomes travellers with a warm tropical climate, characterised by enviable stability throughout the year. There are hardly any sharp temperature fluctuations here: average figures comfortably stay in the range of +21°C to +24°C, and daily highs regularly reach +26…+28°C. Thanks to such a consistent temperature regime, the resort is perfect for a holiday in any season, allowing you to enjoy the warmth without sweltering heat.

Two main periods are clearly distinct during the year: the dry season and the rainy season. From December to April, dry and sunny weather reigns in Huatulco with minimal rainfall, making this time ideal for beach holidays and excursions. Starting from May through October, the number of rainy days increases significantly, reaching its peak in summer and early autumn. However, even during this period, nature blooms, and rains often bring pleasant freshness.

Temperature

The climate in Huatulco is distinguished by enviable stability, making this Mexican resort an attractive destination practically all year round. The temperature graph here is very even: annual average values fluctuate smoothly within a narrow range from +21.4°C to +24.0°C. Interestingly, the hottest months are not in summer, but spring — April and May. It is at this time that the highest average indicators are recorded, and the daily maximum in April can reach +28.6°C, creating ideal conditions for a beach holiday before the start of the wetter season.

The summer period, despite stereotypes about tropical heat, is characterised by moderation here. In June, July, and August, the average temperature holds at a comfortable mark of around +23°C, and daily highs rarely exceed +26.7°C. Winter in Huatulco is mild and pleasant: in January and December, the air warms up on average to +21.5°C. This time of year can be described as a period of "eternal spring," when there is neither exhausting heat nor cold.

Travellers should take into account noticeable drops between day and night temperatures, which are observed throughout the year. The difference can be about 9–10 degrees. For example, in January, with daytime comfort at +26°C, at night the thermometer can drop to +16.7°C. This evening and night freshness is a big plus for comfortable sleep; however, for walks after sunset, it is recommended to bring light long-sleeved clothing with you.

Precipitation

In Huatulco, the division of the year into dry and wet seasons is clearly defined, which is typical for the tropical climate of this region of Mexico. The dry season lasts from December to March. During these months, the probability of precipitation is minimal: the average level is only about 1 mm, and the number of rainy days does not exceed 4–7 per month. This is the most popular time for beach holidays when the sky remains clear almost constantly.

The rainy season begins in May and continues until October. The wettest month in terms of rainfall volume is September (26 mm). A characteristic feature of summer in Huatulco is the high frequency of rains: statistics show that in July and August, precipitation can fall almost daily (up to 30–31 rainy days). However, these are often short-term downpours that refresh the air and are quickly replaced by the sun.

Transition periods, such as April and November, are characterised by moderate weather. Although the number of days with precipitation may increase (for example, up to 13 days in April and 17 in November), the total volume of moisture remains insignificant (2–4 mm), which rarely interferes with travellers' plans.

What to Pack

When packing for Huatulco, give preference to a summer wardrobe, as warm and comfortable weather reigns here all year round. The basis of your luggage should consist of items made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen: T-shirts, shorts, light dresses, and sundresses will be perfect. Since even in the coolest months (January-February) the temperature at night rarely drops below +16°C, for evening walks by the ocean, one light sweater, windbreaker, or cardigan will be enough.

It is important to consider the seasonality of rainfall when planning a trip. From December to April, the dry season prevails, so be sure to bring sunglasses, a hat, and high SPF sunscreen — the sun in Mexico is very active. However, if your trip falls during the period from June to October, be prepared for frequent rains: in these months, precipitation falls almost daily. A light compact raincoat, an umbrella, and quick-drying clothes will become your best helpers during this period.

Don't forget comfortable shoes: open sandals are suitable for a beach holiday, and for excursions around the city and surroundings, it is better to choose light sneakers or trainers in which it will be comfortable to walk for a long time. Given the tropical climate, it is also useful to have insect repellent with you. The principle of layering in clothing will help you easily adapt to temperature changes between daytime warmth and the freshness of the sea breeze in the evenings.
