General Weather Overview

Puerto Escondido welcomes travellers with a hot tropical climate, characterised by enviable temperature stability. Throughout the year, eternal summer reigns here: the thermometer rarely drops below comfortable levels, and the average air temperature fluctuates within a narrow range from +24°C to +26°C. Thanks to this, the ocean water remains warm and pleasant for swimming regardless of the calendar.

The year here is clearly divided into two distinct seasons: dry and wet. From December to April, rains are practically excluded, and the sun shines almost every day, making this period the peak for tourism. Winter and spring months are ideal for those who want to enjoy guaranteed clear weather and a calm beach holiday without surprises from the skies.

From May to October, the picture changes: the rainy season arrives on the coast. At this time, especially from June to September, the number of rainy days increases significantly, reaching a maximum. Precipitation often falls in the form of intense tropical downpours, which can alternate with sunny intervals. Despite high humidity and frequent rains, the air temperature remains high, maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a tropical resort.

Temperature

The climate in Puerto Escondido is distinguished by enviable stability, offering tourists warmth and comfort practically all year round. The annual temperature range here is very narrow: average figures vary smoothly from 23.9°C in the winter months to 26.0°C in late spring. The hottest period is considered to be May, when the average temperature reaches its maximum, whilst April days often delight with figures up to 29.5°C. The "coolest" months are January and December, although the word "coolness" is quite relative here, as even at this time the air warms up on average to 24°C.

The summer period in this Mexican resort is characterised by a steady temperature background. From June to August, the average temperature holds at the level of 25.1°C – 25.4°C. Although summer is not the period of peak heat, high humidity can intensify the sensation of warmth. Winter in Puerto Escondido is exceptionally mild and pleasant: from December to February, daytime highs are around 28°C, creating ideal conditions for a beach holiday without exhausting heat.

Diurnal temperature fluctuations here are moderate, making evenings and nights quite comfortable. The difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum is usually from 4 to 8 degrees. For example, in the winter months after the daytime warmth, the nighttime temperature can drop to 19.9°C — 20.0°C, bringing welcome freshness, whilst in summer, nights remain very warm, with figures around 22.5°C.

Precipitation

In Puerto Escondido, a clear division of the year into a dry season and a rainy season is observed, which is typical for this region of Mexico. If your goal is to enjoy the sun without the risk of getting wet, the ideal time for a trip will be the period from December to April. In these months, especially in January, February, and March, the probability of precipitation tends to zero (0 mm), and the number of days with any moisture is minimal — just 1–3 days for the entire month.

With the arrival of summer, the weather picture changes. Starting from June and right up to October, humidity rises, and rains become a regular phenomenon. The peak of the rainy season falls in August and September: at this time, statistics record up to 30 rainy days per month. This means that an umbrella or raincoat may be needed by you practically daily.

The wettest month of the year is September, when the greatest amount of precipitation falls (on average 18 mm). Despite frequent rains in summer and early autumn, they bring pleasant freshness, as the air temperature remains high. Precipitation here falls exclusively in the form of rain; snow does not occur in this tropical climate.

What to Pack

Puerto Escondido delights travellers with warmth all year round, so the basis of your luggage should be light summer clothing. Give preference to natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, which will help you feel comfortable at an average temperature of about 25°C. Be sure to take several sets of swimwear, sunglasses, and a reliable hat with you — the sun here is very active. The driest period falls on the months from December to March, whilst in November and April, which are transitional months, the probability of rains increases slightly, although there are still enough sunny days.

If your trip is planned for the period from May to October, it is worth preparing for a full-fledged rainy season. During these months, especially from June to September, precipitation falls very frequently, so a light raincoat, a waterproof cover for a backpack, or a compact umbrella will become indispensable items. At the same time, the air remains hot and humid, so you are unlikely to need warm clothing; it is better to choose quick-drying items that are comfortable in conditions of high humidity.

Regarding footwear, it is worth taking comfortable sandals or flip-flops for a beach holiday, as well as light breathable trainers for long walks around the city and excursions. Since even at night the temperature rarely drops below 20°C, the principle of layering is not as relevant here as in other regions, however, a light long-sleeved shirt will be useful for protection against insects in the evenings. Do not forget also a cream with a high level of SPF protection and a quality repellent.
