Shopping in Paterswolde is a calm and measured activity, devoid of the bustle of major metropolises. Here you will not find huge shopping centers or streets packed with boutiques of world brands. Instead, the town offers cozy local shops where you can purchase essentials, high-quality products, and charming items for the home. For large-scale shopping and wardrobe updates, locals and tourists usually head to neighboring Groningen, located just a few minutes' drive away.
The main retail life is concentrated along the main road connecting Paterswolde and neighboring Eelde — Hoofdweg. Here you will find supermarkets, pharmacies, flower shops, and small clothing and accessory stores. A walk through this area will allow you to feel the atmosphere of the Dutch province, peek into a family bakery for fresh pastries, or choose a bouquet in one of the florists the region is famous for.
There are no large malls directly in the town. Trade here is represented by a street retail format: small shops and separate pavilions. If your goal is a serious shopping tour visiting well-known chain stores, it is best to take advantage of the excellent transport links and reach the center of Groningen, where the choice is much wider and more diverse.
However, a real find for lovers of vintage and unique items are the local markets. Of particular note are the famous flea markets and fairs regularly held in the huge Flowerdome complex in neighboring Eelde. This place attracts collectors and antique hunters from all over the northern part of the country. Here you can find antique dishes, rare books, jewelry, and interior items with a history that will be a great reminder of your trip.
As souvenirs from Paterswolde, it is worth bringing something that reflects the local flavor. Given the region's fame as a center of floriculture, tulip bulbs or other flower bulbs would make a wonderful gift (be sure to check the phytosanitary control rules for export when purchasing). Gastronomic souvenirs are also popular: farm cheeses, traditional Drente sausages, or a jar of the famous mustard from Groningen.
Shops are usually open from Monday to Saturday. On Monday, many open only after lunch (from 1:00 PM), and on other weekdays they work from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. On Fridays, there is often a "shopping evening" (koopavond), when shop doors may be open until 9:00 PM, though in small towns not everyone follows this rule. Sunday is often a day off for most shops, with the exception of large grocery supermarkets.
Regarding payment, the Netherlands is a country where cashless payment is preferred. In many small shops, bakeries, and cafes, they may accept only bank cards (Pin only) and refuse cash. At the same time, it should be kept in mind that credit cards are not accepted everywhere; preference is traditionally given to debit cards, although the situation is gradually changing in favor of international payment systems.
The Tax Free system (VAT refund) is available for tourists from non-EU countries for purchases over 50 euros on one receipt. However, in Paterswolde itself, it will be difficult to find shops that issue special forms for tax refunds. It is more convenient to use this option when shopping in large cities or directly at the airport before flying home.
