What to Do

At this museum, every visitor will find something to enjoy: from a thoughtful study of ancient archaeological artifacts to fun participation in interactive shows. You can examine antique agricultural tools, exquisite kitchen utensils, and rare textile samples that vividly tell the story of daily life in past centuries.

A special program has been prepared for young guests. Children can go on a "treasure hunt" with the museum bird Pijke, complete quest tasks, or play thematic museum bingo. Creative workshops offer the chance to hand-craft memorable souvenirs — from bracelets to small model cars — making the visit especially memorable for families.

Don't miss the chance to visit temporary exhibitions, which are often dedicated to popular themes, such as the world of Playmobil. Thanks to its modern approach and rotating exhibitions, every visit to the museum brings new discoveries and vivid impressions.

Getting There

Getting to the museum is very easy, as it is located in the heart of the city at Keulsepoort 5. The attraction is in close proximity to the Venlo Centraal railway station — the walk takes only about 10–15 minutes. The route from the station passes through pleasant urban areas, allowing you to get into the spirit of exploration before you even arrive.

The city has excellent transport links: trains operated by Arriva and NS arrive regularly from Eindhoven, Maastricht, and other regions. If you prefer public transport, most city and suburban buses also stop near the central station.

For those traveling by car, there are parking zones in the city center, although it is worth noting that the museum is located in a pedestrian area. For precise navigation, it is convenient to use Google Maps, aiming for the entrance coordinates of the modern museum building, which is hard to miss.

History & Facts

The history of this cultural center is inextricably linked to the merging of several important regional collections. The institution's predecessor was the Goltziusmuseum, founded in 1963. Its official opening took place on June 3, 1967, with the participation of the Minister of Culture, Marga Klompé. The core of the collection at that time was the assembly from a defunct museum in Ospel, which included rare historical artifacts.

In the late 1980s, a decision was made for a large-scale reorganization: the Limburg Institute for Folklore, previously based in Limbricht Castle, moved to Venlo. This merger allowed for the creation of a unified space where the history of the province is presented as fully as possible — from ancient times to the present day.

Today, the Limburgs Museum pays special attention to archaeological finds from the Neolithic era and the city's development as an important trade hub in the Middle Ages. The museum's exhibits clearly demonstrate the Roman influence on the region and the evolution of the daily life of Limburg residents over the centuries.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the main collections and permanent exhibitions, an average visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to view the archaeological halls, learn about folklore traditions, and study the temporary installations.

If you are planning a visit with children, we recommend setting aside about 4 hours. Engaging quests, creative workshops, and interactive zones are so captivating for little explorers that time at the museum flies by unnoticed.

Working Hours

The Limburgs Museum is open to guests from Tuesday to Sunday. The institution's primary operating hours are from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, allowing you to comfortably plan your visit for either the morning or the afternoon.

Please note that Monday is the official day off. We recommend visiting the museum on weekdays for a quieter experience or on weekends when additional family activities are often held.
