Meridian Mall

About

In the heart of the city of Dunedin lies Meridian Mall—the largest and most modern shopping complex in the southern part of the South Island. This country, New Zealand, is famous for its natural beauty, but Dunedin's urban architecture is also worth noting, especially in its central shopping district.

The complex covers an area of 16,000 m², housing 50 diverse stores across three levels. Designed by Australian architects, the mall is a bright and spacious area where modern shopping galleries blend seamlessly with office spaces and convenient multi-level parking.

Meridian Mall is more than just a single building; it's part of a massive retail hub. Through its integration with the neighboring Golden Centre and Wall Street Mall, the total shopping area exceeds 28,000 m², covering nearly an entire city block. This makes it a premier retail destination, featuring both international brands and popular local retailers.

What to Do

For shopping enthusiasts, the conditions are ideal: 50 stores offering a wide selection of goods are gathered under one roof. The main attractions are the anchor tenants—JB Hi-Fi and Smiths City, which offer a huge range of electronics, appliances, and stylish home goods. Strolling through the center's three floors, you'll find everything from fashion to unique souvenirs.

When it's time for a break, head to the lower level to find the spacious food court. It features a variety of culinary concepts, making it a great spot for a quick lunch or a full meal. The center's atmosphere is always lively, allowing you to experience the pulse of modern Dunedin.

Don't miss the chance to walk over to the neighboring Wall Street Mall. There, right beneath your feet through glass floor panels, lies a unique historical site—a corduroy road from the 1850s. This is one of the city's first pathways and holds the highest category of heritage status, adding cultural value to your casual shopping trip.

Getting There

Finding Meridian Mall is easy, as it occupies a central position at 285 George Street. If you are staying in the city center, a pleasant walk from the famous Octagon will take just a few minutes.

For those who prefer public transport, there are several bus stops on George Street served by the city's main routes. The Dunedin Railway Station is a 10–15 minute walk away, making the complex accessible to those coming from the suburbs.

If you are traveling by car, there is a spacious multi-level parking facility located directly above the shopping levels. The trip from Dunedin Airport (DUD) by taxi or shuttle takes about 30 minutes, covering a distance of 30 kilometers.

History & Facts

The history of this location began long before the modern shopping center. Meridian Mall was constructed between 1995 and 1997 directly behind the historic Arthur Barnett department store building, which was designed by the famous architect Edmund Anscombe in 1924. The complex officially opened on September 5, 1997, with an impressive investment of 50 million New Zealand dollars.

One of the most recognizable features of the building for a long time was the legendary "Can't Stop" neon sign, created by artist Heber Thompson. The figure of a man and a horse graced the city skyline for decades, becoming a symbol of resilience and progress until it was finally turned off in 2016. These historical details give this modern commercial site a special sense of continuity.

A major milestone in the development of the complex was the large-scale renovation in 2009, when Meridian Mall was physically connected to the neighboring Golden Centre and Wall Street Mall. This merger created a giant retail hub of over 28,000 m². Interestingly, during the construction of Wall Street Mall, an ancient corduroy road from the 1850s was discovered, which is now preserved and viewable through transparent floor panels.

Time Needed

Typically, 1–2 hours is enough for visitors to leisurely browse the main shops and visit the large electronics departments. This is sufficient for basic shopping and a quick look at the range of products.

If you plan to have lunch at the food court or want to explore the entire integrated complex, including the Golden Centre and Wall Street Mall, it's worth setting aside at least 3–4 hours. This will allow you to see the historical elements, such as the ancient road under glass, and enjoy the atmosphere of the city's main shopping hub without rushing.
