About

Imagine a blooming 14-hectare oasis in the heart of a vibrant city—this is how the Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden greets its guests. Located in the picturesque city of Cluj-Napoca, this garden is considered one of the largest and richest in Southeast Europe. As part of Babeș-Bolyai University, it serves not only as a place for quiet strolls but also as an important scientific center, housing more than 10,000 plant species from across the globe.

The garden's layout is meticulously planned and divided into thematic sectors. Here you can see the flora of the Carpathian Mountains, learn about medicinal herbs, or evaluate the economic importance of various crops. The exotic zones add a special charm: an authentic Japanese Garden with a pagoda and a stream, as well as a Roman Garden, where real archaeological artifacts from the ancient colony of Napoca are hidden among the greenery.

This unique attraction in Romania was recognized as a historical monument in 2010. Not only the outdoor areas but also the greenhouses deserve attention, where giant Amazonian water lilies thrive in a tropical microclimate. The Alexandru Borza Garden is the perfect place for those seeking inspiration in nature and wanting to touch the living history of botanical science.

What to Do

At the Botanical Garden, everyone will find something to enjoy, from meditative strolls to the serious study of flora. The main reason people come here is the opportunity to take a kind of world tour, moving from Carpathian firs to the tropical jungles of the greenhouses. Be sure to visit the Botanical Museum, which houses valuable herbaria and scientific exhibits that reveal the secrets of the plant world.

Lovers of aesthetics and tranquility should spend time in the Japanese Garden. Here, among neatly trimmed lawns and the sounds of a babbling stream by a traditional pagoda, ideal conditions are created for reflection and relaxation. The Roman Garden is equally interesting, where you can see ancient sculptures, including a statue of the goddess Ceres, surrounded by plants typical of the classical era.

Photographers will appreciate the picturesque views of the rose garden during the blooming season and the impressive Amazonian lilies in the greenhouses. For families with children, the garden is an excellent educational platform: you can study medicinal plants and rare species listed in the Red Data Book firsthand. During the warmer months, the garden often hosts scientific and educational events, which the administration announces on its social media pages.

Getting There

The Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden is conveniently located in the southern part of Cluj-Napoca, just a 20–30 minute leisurely walk from the historical center. If you are near Museum Square (Piața Muzeului) or Matthias Corvin Street, a walk to the garden will be a pleasant addition to your route.

For those who prefer public transport, buses and trams heading toward Babeș-Bolyai University are suitable. If you are arriving from Cluj-Napoca Airport (about 15 km away), it is most convenient to take a taxi (a 20–30 minute ride) or take bus No. 8 to the city center and then walk a short distance.

Drivers can find parking spaces right at the garden entrance. Please note that the garden is located on hilly terrain with natural elevation changes, so be sure to choose comfortable shoes for your walk.

History & Facts

The history of this green treasure began in 1872 when university professor Sámuel Brassai founded the garden with active financial support from the Hungarian Count Imre Mikó, who served as the Governor of Transylvania. From the very beginning, this place was intended not only as a research base but also as a space for the city's residents to relax.

Over a century and a half, many prominent scientists have managed the garden, including Ágoston Kanitz and Vince Borbás; however, it owes much of its modern appearance and status to Alexandru Borza. The garden was named in his honor. Under his leadership, the territory was significantly expanded, and the collections were enriched with the rarest specimens of world flora.

In 2010, the Romanian Ministry of Culture officially recognized the site as a historical monument. Today, it is considered one of the most significant botanical centers in Southeast Europe, preserving a unique landscape with natural watercourses and elevation changes that set it apart from other similar parks.

Time Needed

To explore all the thematic zones and visit the greenhouses without rushing, a typical visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to walk along the main paths, take beautiful photos in the Japanese Garden, and enjoy the peace by the water.

If you plan to study the Botanical Museum's exhibits in detail, visit the herbarium, or are visiting with children, you should set aside up to 4 hours. The garden invites long contemplation, so it’s best not to plan a rushed visit.

Working Hours

Currently, the garden's operating hours are as follows: Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 15:00. The garden is officially closed to visitors on Saturday and Sunday.

Since the hours for the greenhouses and the museum may differ from the general schedule, and opening times may vary during different seasons (for example, staying open until 16:30), it is recommended to check for the latest information on the university's official website or by phone before your visit.
