How to get to Dikson

Dikson is the northernmost settlement of the Russian Federation, located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean in the Krasnoyarsk Krai. This legendary Arctic settlement attracts enthusiasts of extreme tourism and the harsh polar atmosphere who wish to see the edge of the world with their own eyes. Getting to Dikson is a true expedition, as due to its remoteness and lack of roads, aviation remains the main method of connection with the "mainland".

Air travel is practically the only reliable way to reach this remote Arctic corner. Flights are received by the local Dikson Airport (DKS), which connects the settlement with regional centers, most often with a transfer in Norilsk.

The flight here is an adventure in itself, allowing you to view the endless tundra from above. The airport is located on an island, so travelers should be prepared for the fact that the onward journey to the main part of the settlement depends on weather conditions.

The railway network does not reach the coast of the Kara Sea, so it is impossible to get to Dikson exclusively by train. The nearest major railway junctions are thousands of kilometers to the south, deep within the continent.

Tourists who prefer trains will have to combine their route: travel to major Siberian cities such as Krasnoyarsk or Moscow, and then transfer to a plane to cover the remaining distance to the Arctic.

Due to the absence of roads connecting Dikson with the rest of the country, regular bus service is completely absent here. The landscape of the tundra and permafrost makes laying routes for public transport impossible.

Bus tours in the usual sense are not organized here. You can reach this region only by air or as part of specialized expeditions, so you should not plan a trip by bus.

A trip to Dikson by private car is not a task for the ordinary tourist, but for prepared thrill-seekers using special vehicles. There are no year-round roads to the settlement, and it is possible to get here by land only in winter via "winter roads" as part of organized convoys of all-terrain vehicles.

The distance from the nearest cities is immense, and the journey requires professional Arctic driving skills and complete autonomy. Ordinary taxis or car rentals are not available for such a trip.

Traveling to one of the northernmost settlements in the world requires careful preparation and respect for the harsh conditions of the Arctic. Here are some important tips to make your trip to Dikson safe and memorable.

1. Documents and passes. Dikson is located in a border zone. Be sure to obtain a special pass for entry in advance, otherwise, you simply will not be allowed out of the airport.
2. Clothing and equipment. Even in summer, it can be cold and windy here. Bring thermal underwear, a windproof jacket, a hat, and gloves, and in winter — professional Arctic clothing.
3. Finances. Bank cards may not be accepted in small shops, and ATMs may work intermittently due to connection issues. Always carry a sufficient supply of cash.
4. Groceries and prices. Be prepared for food prices here to be 2–3 times higher than on the mainland. If possible, bring a supply of non-perishable food (nuts, chocolate, canned goods).
5. Communication and Internet. Mobile connection and the Internet may be unstable or absent altogether. Warn your loved ones about the possible loss of contact and download offline maps.
6. Wildlife. You are in the habitat of polar bears. Never walk alone outside the settlement and listen carefully to the safety instructions of local residents.
