Current Weather
General Weather Overview
The climate in Gelendzhik can be described as close to subtropical, with Mediterranean traits. This means the city delights its guests and residents with clearly defined seasons, each attractive in its own way. Overall, the weather here promotes comfortable relaxation throughout most of the year, offering a variety of experiences depending on the time of visit.
Summer in Gelendzhik is warm and predominantly sunny, ideal for a beach holiday. Average temperatures in July and August hover around 23-25°C, and the sea water warms up to comfortable levels. Winters here are mild, with average temperatures slightly above zero, and although light frosts are sometimes possible, snow falls rarely and melts quickly. Spring arrives early, bringing blooms and gradual warming, while autumn gifts a "velvet season" with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.
One of the distinctive features of Gelendzhik's climate is the comparatively low amount of precipitation throughout the year. The highest number of days with precipitation falls on the winter months (December, January), whereas summer months, especially August, are characterized by a minimal number of rainy days. This makes the summer and early autumn periods particularly attractive for those looking for sunny weather for their holiday.
Temperature
The temperature regime in Gelendzhik is characterized by clearly defined seasons and comfortable conditions for relaxation during most of the year. The annual range of average temperatures varies from cool values in winter to hot ones in summer. The warmest months are July and August, when the average air temperature reaches 23.8°C and 24.6°C respectively. Maximum daytime temperatures during this period often rise to 28.8°C - 29.8°C. The coldest month is considered to be January with an average temperature of 2.9°C and an average minimum of about -0.2°C, followed by February with an average temperature of 3.5°C.
Summer in Gelendzhik is pleasantly hot. Starting from June, when the average temperature is 21.1°C (minimum 16.3°C, maximum 25.9°C), the weather becomes ideal for a beach holiday. In July and August, the daytime heat can be significant, however, nights bring relief with temperatures around 18.9°C - 19.3°C. Daily temperature fluctuations in summer are quite noticeable: the difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum can be about 10°C, which ensures comfortable evenings after a sultry day.
Winter months in Gelendzhik are distinguished by their mildness. Average temperatures in December (5.5°C), January (2.9°C), and February (3.5°C) usually remain above zero. Night frosts happen, especially in January when the average minimum reaches -0.2°C, but during the day the temperature typically rises to 6-8°C. Spring (for example, April with an average temperature of 11.0°C) and autumn (for example, October with an average temperature of 13.6°C) months are characterized by pleasant moderate weather and also demonstrate perceptible temperature drops between day and night, which is typical for the region's climate.
Precipitation
One of the key features of Gelendzhik's climate is the extremely low total amount of precipitation throughout the year. Although days with precipitation are marked on the calendar, their intensity is generally low. The average monthly amount of precipitation fluctuates within just 1-3 mm, which indicates predominantly dry weather, even during periods when precipitation is more likely.
Despite the overall low amount, a certain seasonality is observed in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year, especially if looking at the frequency of its occurrence. The highest number of days with precipitation falls on the winter months: January and December lead with 13 rainy days on average. They are followed by February (11 days) and March (12 days). The driest period, both in terms of precipitation amount (just 1 mm) and frequency, is the end of summer – beginning of autumn. In August, there are on average only 5 days with precipitation, and in September – 6 days.
The nature of precipitation in Gelendzhik is predominantly rain. Given the mild winters, snowfalls here are an infrequent phenomenon and, as a rule, short-lived, especially with such low overall precipitation figures. Although in January the average minimum temperature drops to -0.2°C, which theoretically admits the possibility of snow or sleet, the average monthly temperature (2.9°C) and the small amount of precipitation (3 mm) make heavy snowfalls unlikely. The greatest amount of precipitation, albeit very modest, falls in January and November (3 mm each), and the least – in April, July, and August (1 mm each).
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Gelendzhik, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly, focusing on the season, so that your holiday is as comfortable as possible. In summer, from June to August, when the average air temperature is 21-25°C, and the maximum can reach 28-30°C, the basis of your luggage will consist of light breathable items: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and, of course, swimwear. Do not forget sunscreen with a high protection factor, headwear (a hat or cap), and quality sunglasses, as the sun is very active during this period. For evening walks or in case of rare summer rain (despite the small amount of precipitation, about 1-2 mm per month, there are 5-9 days with precipitation in summer months), a light cardigan or windbreaker may come in handy.
In the off-season – spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) – the weather in Gelendzhik is more changeable, so the principle of layering in clothing is ideal here. The temperature can fluctuate from +6°C in early spring to +20°C in May, and from a pleasant +19°C in September to +8°C in November. We recommend taking jeans or other comfortable trousers, long and short-sleeved t-shirts, a sweater or fleece jacket, as well as a mid-season jacket (possibly waterproof). In winter, from December to February, it is cool in Gelendzhik, with the average temperature holding around +3...+6°C, sometimes dropping to zero. You will need warm clothes: sweaters, insulated trousers, a winter jacket, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Considering that the number of days with precipitation in winter and the off-season increases to 10-13 per month (although the precipitation itself is usually not very heavy, 2-3 mm), waterproof shoes and a compact umbrella will be very useful. Regardless of the season, do not forget to take comfortable shoes for walking along the embankment and the picturesque surroundings of Gelendzhik.
