The S-56 Submarine Museum is an iconic military-historical memorial and one of the most famous landmarks in the city of Vladivostok, located in the Far East of Russia. The S-56 name was not accidental: the letter "S" (from "Srednyaya") means "medium," indicating the class of this diesel-electric submarine. The sub had a glorious combat record and was placed on permanent display in 1975, being converted into a museum. Today, it is a branch of the Military History Museum of the Pacific Fleet and is rightfully considered one of the city's symbols.
The submarine's interior is divided into seven compartments. Four of them, starting from the aft (seventh through fourth), house an exhibition detailing the history of the national submarine fleet, as well as the service and daily lives of submariners. Visitors can see authentic equipment, walk through narrow corridors, and imagine what it was like to be on a long-range mission aboard a submarine. It is an unforgettable immersion into history for all ages, especially for those interested in naval technology and the sailors' feats.
