The climate in Nyanza, as throughout Rwanda, can be described as tropical highland. Thanks to the city's high-altitude location, there is no sweltering heat here, and the weather remains surprisingly mild and stable all year round. The average annual air temperature typically fluctuates within a comfortable range of +18 °C to +20 °C, creating a sense of "eternal spring."

The region has a distinct pattern of alternating dry and wet periods. The main rainy seasons occur from February to April and from October to January. High humidity, caused by proximity to the African Great Lakes and an abundance of water resources, helps maintain lush greenery around the city. However, even during the rainy months, the temperature remains pleasant and suitable for tourism.

The temperature in Nyanza is remarkably consistent. Daytime highs throughout the year typically stay within +23...+26 °C. August and September are considered the warmest months, when the air can warm up to a peak of +28 °C. Due to the high-altitude location, the heat here is never stifling, remaining mild and comfortable for walking tours.

Despite the daytime warmth, it's worth considering the significant diurnal temperature fluctuations. After sunset, the air cools down quite quickly, and nighttime temperatures can drop to +14...+15 °C. Frost is completely non-existent here, but the chill during the dark hours is noticeable, especially from June to August, when the lowest average temperatures are recorded.

June, July, and August are considered the driest: for example, in July, an average of only one rainy day is recorded. The nature of precipitation in the transition months is usually moderate, often in the form of brief drizzle. There is no snow in this region due to the consistently high temperatures typical of the tropical belt.

When packing for Nyanza, prioritize clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Lightweight t-shirts, trousers, and comfortable closed-toe walking shoes will be the staples of your wardrobe. Don't forget to bring sunglasses and sunscreen with SPF 50+, as the equatorial sun in Rwanda can be very strong even in cloudy weather.
