What to Do

The main draw for guests remains the thrilling safari tours to the nearby uMkhuze Game Reserve. Here, you can encounter the famous "Big Five" and observe over 420 bird species in their natural habitat. For those who enjoy the water, boat excursions on Lake Jozini are available, where hippos and elephants can often be spotted coming down to drink.

If you prefer active recreation, be sure to hike to the summit of Ghost Mountain. During the trek, guides will share local legends and show you hidden trails. For a deeper immersion into the local culture, the hotel organizes cultural visits to Zulu settlements, where you can learn about the traditional way of life of the Myeni family and taste local cuisine.

After an eventful day, it’s wonderful to relax at the Ghost Mountain Spa or spend time by one of the pools surrounded by exotic birds. Inside the hotel, take a moment to visit the gallery of historical photographs and portraits of Zulu monarchs, which create a unique atmosphere connecting the past and present.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach this picturesque corner of Zululand is by car. The hotel is located in Mkuze, right at the foot of Ghost Mountain, near the busy N2 highway. The drive from Durban or King Shaka International Airport takes about 3–4 hours on paved roads.

For those who prefer not to drive, transfers can be arranged through the hotel from Richards Bay or Durban airports. If you are traveling independently, use the GPS coordinates (32.0344654, -27.6145159) for accurate navigation. While the main roads are in good condition, a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 is recommended for trips into the nearby game reserves.

Public transport in the region is limited and geared primarily toward locals, so taxis from the town center or organized tours remain the most comfortable options for tourists. The proximity to the uMkhuze Game Reserve (just a 10–15 minute drive) makes the hotel an ideal base for morning safaris.

History & Facts

The history of the Ghost Mountain Inn began in October 1962, when Maureen and Roy Rutherford decided to open a hotel for travelers braving the dusty roads of northern Natal. Before that, guests often stayed in their family home, and this genuine warmth became the foundation of today’s 4-star resort. Today, the hotel is managed by the third generation of the Rutherford family, carefully preserving their traditions.

The Ghost Mountain itself (Tshaneni), which towers over the hotel, is shrouded in dark legends. It served as the burial ground for the chiefs of the Ndwandwe tribe. According to lore, the bodies of rulers were mummified, wrapped in the skins of black bulls, and secretly carried to hidden caves. Locals still tell stories of strange lights and sounds coming from the summit, and the mystical atmosphere of these parts even inspired H. Rider Haggard to write his novel Nada the Lily.

Beyond the legends, these lands remember real battles as well. In 1884, the Battle of Tshaneni took place at the foot of the mountain, where the forces of Prince Dinuzulu emerged victorious over his rivals. Inside the hotel, you can see historic photographs and portraits of the Zulu kings who have ruled these lands since the 1600s, allowing guests to truly touch the living history of South Africa.

Time Needed

For a quick tour of the grounds and lunch at the restaurant with mountain views, 2–3 hours is sufficient. This is an excellent option for a short stop while traveling through the KwaZulu-Natal region.

However, to fully experience the magic of this place, it is recommended to stay for 1–2 days. This will allow you to go on a morning safari, hike to the top of the mountain, and enjoy a relaxing evening at the spa, fully immersing yourself in the atmosphere of African hospitality.

Working Hours

The Ghost Mountain Inn welcomes guests 24/7, ensuring a comfortable check-in at any time of day. The restaurant and spa center may have their own operating hours, so it is recommended to check the official website or inquire with the receptionist to book treatments or reserve a dinner table.
