General Weather Overview

The climate of Jaén can be described as Mediterranean with significant continental influence. This means travellers can expect quite contrasting seasons here: from cool and moderately damp winters to truly sweltering and dry summers. Overall, the weather here is sunny and favourable for tourism for most of the year.

Summer in the city is a season of high temperatures and clear skies. In July and August, the air often warms up above 35°C, and rain during this period is a rarity, making these months the driest of the year. Winter, conversely, brings coolness with average temperatures around 8–10°C and an increase in rainy days, although severe cold is uncharacteristic for the region.

The transitional seasons—spring and autumn—offer the most balanced conditions. During this time, comfortable warm weather sets in, perfectly suitable for long walks and sightseeing without exhausting heat or the need to bundle up in warm clothes.

Temperature

The climate in Jaén is distinguished by a marked contrast between seasons, offering tourists a variety of weather conditions throughout the year. The coldest month is traditionally January with an average temperature of about 8.2°C, when nighttime figures can drop to 3°C. However, by spring the air warms up quickly, reaching peak values in July, which is considered the hottest month with an average temperature of 28.5°C and daytime highs exceeding 35°C.

Summer in this region of Andalusia is characterized by dry heat. In July and August, the sun is very active: average daytime highs hover around 35–36°C, making midday the ideal time for resting indoors or in shady parks. Winter, on the other hand, is quite mild and comfortable for excursions: even in December and January, daytime temperatures often reach 13–14°C, and severe frosts are a rarity here, although a warm jacket will be necessary for evening walks.

An important feature of Jaén's temperature regime is the noticeable daily fluctuations. The difference between daytime warmth and nighttime coolness can be substantial, especially during the warm season. For example, at the height of summer, after the daytime heat, the temperature drops to a pleasant 21°C at night, bringing long-awaited freshness. Spring and autumn months, such as May and September, offer the most balanced weather with averages around 20–23°C, avoiding both winter chills and summer heat.

Precipitation

The climate in Jaén is characterized by an uneven distribution of precipitation, which is typical for the southern regions of Spain. The driest period falls in summer: July and August are the driest months when rainfall approaches zero. In July, for instance, an average of only one rainy day is recorded, so summer trips are almost guaranteed to take place under clear skies and scorching sun.

The highest probability of precipitation is observed during the spring period. March can be called the wettest month of the year: statistics show about 11 days with precipitation. April also tends to be rainy (about 10 days), so an umbrella will become an indispensable accessory for walking around the city in spring.

In autumn and winter, rains occur with moderate regularity—from October to January, an average of 8 rainy days are recorded monthly. Since winter temperatures in the city usually remain above freezing, precipitation falls mainly as rain, and snowfalls are a fairly rare phenomenon.

What to Pack

Jaén, located in the sunny region of Andalusia, is famous for its hot and dry summers. If your trip is planned for the period from June to September, prioritize light, loose clothing made from natural breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat or cap, high-quality sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen, as daytime temperatures in July and August often exceed 35°C, and rain at this time is a rarity.

Winter here is quite mild, however, nights can be chilly when the thermometer drops to 3-4°C. For a trip during the winter months, a warm mid-season jacket and a cosy scarf will come in handy. Spring and autumn are distinguished by changeable weather, so the best strategy is the principle of layering: a combination of a T-shirt, a jumper, and a light windbreaker will allow you to feel comfortable with temperature changes throughout the day, removing or adding items as necessary.

Regardless of the season, pack comfortable, broken-in flat shoes or trainers in your suitcase, as the city invites long walks along historic streets and hilly terrain. In spring, especially in March and April, the likelihood of precipitation increases, so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will be useful accessories so that a short rain shower does not interfere with your plans.
