General Weather Overview

The climate in Granada can be described as Mediterranean with continental features. This means that the city enjoys hot and dry summers, while winters here are quite cool. Throughout the year, there is a significant temperature variation, allowing for four distinct seasons, each with its own unique character.

The summer months, especially July and August, are the hottest and sunniest, with an average temperature of around 26°C and maximum values regularly exceeding 32°C. Rainfall during this period is practically non-existent. Winter, by contrast, brings coolness: in January, the average temperature is around 6.5°C, and night temperatures can drop close to zero. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with more moderate temperatures.

One of the notable features of the weather in Granada is the low rainfall overall, especially during the summer months. A slight increase in the number of rainy days is observed in spring (particularly in March and April) and autumn (October, November), however, even during these periods, the amount of precipitation remains small. This makes Granada an attractive destination for those who prefer sunny weather for their travels.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Granada is characterized by significant annual fluctuations, ensuring four distinct seasons. The hottest months are typically July and August. During this period, the average air temperature stays around 26°C, and daily highs regularly rise above 32°C (for example, 32.8°C in July and 32.5°C in August). Conversely, the coldest period falls in January, when the average temperature is around 6.5°C, and nighttime lows can drop to 1.5°C.

Summer in Granada, especially in July and August, is distinguished by dry heat. Daytime temperatures are confidently high, but thanks to low humidity, the heat is relatively easy to tolerate. A characteristic feature of this season is the significant diurnal temperature variation: the difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum can reach 13-14°C (for instance, in July from 19.1°C at night to 32.8°C during the day). This means that even after a very hot day, evenings can bring pleasant coolness. June is also warm, with an average maximum temperature of around 27.7°C and a minimum of around 15.0°C.

Winter in Granada, covering December, January, and February, is quite cool but usually mild. Average daytime temperatures in January, the coldest month, are around 11.6°C, while night temperatures drop to an average of 1.5°C. December and February are slightly warmer, with average highs of 12.9°C and 14.2°C respectively, and nighttime lows of 2.6°C - 2.7°C. Spring and autumn months offer the most comfortable conditions: for example, in May the average temperature is 16.7°C (from 10.6°C to 22.7°C), and in October – 16.3°C (from 10.6°C to 22.1°C), making these periods ideal for exploring the city.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Granada is generally quite scarce throughout the year, which is typical for its climate. The city has a distinct dry season, which falls during the summer months. July and August stand out in particular with almost complete absence of rainfall – averaging 0 mm, with the number of days with precipitation in these months being minimal, totaling just 2-3 days. June is also very dry, with a figure of just 1 mm of rainfall and approximately 4 rainy days.

Some increase in rainfall and the number of rainy days is observed in spring and during the autumn-winter period. March is the month with the highest amount of precipitation, although this is only about 3 mm, falling on average over 13 days. April follows with 2 mm of precipitation and approximately 11 rainy days. In autumn and winter months, such as October, November, and December, rainfall typically amounts to about 2 mm per month, and the number of wet days ranges from 7 to 8.

Given the low total volumes of moisture even in the "wettest" periods, rains in Granada tend to be light or moderate in nature. Do not expect frequent or prolonged downpours here. In other months, such as January, February, May, and September, only about 1 mm of precipitation falls, distributed over 6-8 days. Snowfall within the city itself is a rare phenomenon, considering the predominantly positive temperatures even during the winter period.

What to Pack

When packing for Granada, remember that the weather here can be quite contrasting depending on the season, so the right wardrobe selection will make your trip more comfortable. In summer (June-August), hot and dry weather awaits you, so be sure to pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics: shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, and sandals. Don't forget sunscreen with high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat for protection against the scorching sun, as rainfall is practically absent at this time. Considering that even on a hot summer day the evening can bring coolness (the temperature difference can be significant), a light sweater or cardigan will be very useful. Comfortable walking shoes are your indispensable companion at any time of year, as Granada, with its numerous attractions, invites long walks.

In winter (December-February), it can be cool in Granada, especially in the mornings and evenings when temperatures can drop close to zero. You will need warm items: sweaters, fleece tops, warm trousers, a demi-season or winter jacket, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves. Although heavy and prolonged rains are not common, a small compact umbrella or a light waterproof jacket will be useful, as in the winter months, as well as in March, April, October, and November, there are 6-13 days with precipitation. For spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the principle of layering in clothing works best. During the day it may be warm enough to walk in a T-shirt, while mornings and evenings are noticeably cooler, so long-sleeved shirts, light jumpers, and a jacket that can be easily removed or put on depending on the weather will come in handy.
