General weather overview

The climate of Segovia can be characterised as temperate-continental, with distinct seasons. Travellers can expect hot and predominantly dry summers, when average temperatures in July and August reach 22.4°C, and maximums can approach 30°C. Winters here are cool, and at times cold, with average January temperatures around 3.7°C and night frosts. The spring and autumn months offer milder and more comfortable weather, serving as pleasant transitional periods between the summer heat and winter cold.

A distinctive feature of the weather in Segovia is the low total amount of precipitation throughout the year. Even in those months when a higher number of days with precipitation is registered, for example, in November (15 days) or March-April (13 days), the actual volume of falling moisture remains small, usually not exceeding 2-3 mm per month. The summer months, especially July (0 mm of precipitation) and August (1 mm of precipitation), stand out for their aridity, when rain is a rare phenomenon. This makes summer attractive for lovers of sunny weather; however, one should take into account possible significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, especially during the off-season.

Temperature

The climate in Segovia is characterised by pronounced seasonal temperature changes. The annual temperature range is quite wide: from cool winters to hot summers. The hottest months are July and August, when the average air temperature holds at the mark of 22.4°C, and maximum daytime values regularly reach 29.2-29.3°C. Conversely, the coldest month is considered to be January, with an average temperature of 3.7°C and minimum night-time readings dropping on average to -0.1°C.

The summer months in Segovia, from June to August, gift residents and guests of the city warm and predominantly dry weather. In June, the average temperature is a comfortable 18.3°C, gradually rising to peak values in July and August. A characteristic feature of the summer period is significant diurnal temperature fluctuations: hot days give way to noticeably cooler evenings and nights. The difference between the maximum daytime and minimum night-time temperature in July and August can reach almost 14°C, which provides pleasant relief after the daytime heat.

Winter in Segovia, covering the period from December to February, is distinguished by cool weather. Average temperatures in December are around 5.2°C, in January they drop to 3.7°C, and in February they rise slightly again to 5.7°C. Night-time temperatures in January can be slightly below freezing, while during the day the thermometer usually rises to 7-10°C. Diurnal temperature fluctuations are also observed in winter, although less pronounced than in summer, averaging 7-9°C.

Precipitation

In Segovia, a relatively small amount of precipitation is observed throughout the year. Nevertheless, one can distinguish a distinct dry season in summer and periods with more frequent, though usually light, precipitation in spring and autumn. The total annual rainfall is low, which is characteristic of the climate of this region of Spain.

The driest period in Segovia is summer. July stands out with almost a complete absence of precipitation (0 mm) and a minimum number of days with it – only about 4. August is also very dry, with an average rainfall of about 1 mm and approximately 5 days with precipitation. During these months, the weather is predominantly sunny and dry, which is ideal for outdoor sightseeing.

Spring months, such as March and April, are characterised by one of the highest levels of precipitation for Segovia, albeit small – about 3 mm in each, and approximately 13 days with precipitation. A similar situation is observed in October, when about 3 mm of precipitation falls over approximately 11 days. November stands out with the highest frequency of precipitation – on average 15 days, while their total amount is about 2 mm. In winter, especially in January (2 mm of precipitation, 11 days with precipitation), when the average minimum temperature drops to -0.1°C, this small amount of precipitation may fall in the form of light snow or wet snow. In December (2 mm, 11 days with precipitation, min. temp. 1.6°C) and February (1 mm, 7 days with precipitation, min. temp. 1.0°C), precipitation in the form of snow is also possible during corresponding cold spells, but more often it will be light rain or drizzle.

Thus, although Segovia is not characterised by a season of heavy rains, one is most likely to encounter precipitation in November (about 15 days), as well as in March and April (about 13 days in each). The driest month is July. In general, precipitation in the city is predominantly of a light character, and even in months with the highest number of days with precipitation, their total amount remains low.

What to pack

When planning a trip to Segovia, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. Regardless of the season, your main companion should be comfortable footwear for walking along the ancient streets of this historic city. In the summer months (June-August), it is sunny and warm here, the average temperature reaches 22°C, and during the day the air can warm up to 29°C. At this time, you will need light clothing made of breathable fabrics, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Even in summer, evenings can be fresh, so a light sweater, cardigan, or thin jacket will not be amiss.

For travelling to Segovia during the cooler time of year – from autumn to spring – the key principle is layering in clothing. In winter (December-February), the average temperature hovers around 3-5°C, and night frosts are not uncommon, so warm sweaters, a winter jacket, a hat, a scarf, and gloves are simply necessary. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is changeable: daytime temperatures can vary from 7°C to 17-18°C. A light but warm jacket, a jumper, and several layers of clothing will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Although the total amount of precipitation in Segovia is small, rainy days happen quite often, especially in November (up to 15 days), as well as in March and April (about 13 days). Therefore, do not forget to take an umbrella or a light waterproof jacket with you.
