What to Do

The highlight of visiting the castle is undoubtedly the climb to the summit. The journey up the long staircase will reward you with breathtaking panoramic views of the old quarters, mosques, and modern areas of the city. From a bird's-eye view, you get a unique perspective on the historical Ottoman mansions with their vibrant roofs.

Within the fortress grounds, you can touch antiquity while exploring the remaining ruins of buildings. Researchers will be drawn to the four massive water cisterns that sustained the castle's defenders for centuries, as well as the remains of ancient shrines dedicated to the Phrygian goddess Cybele. Special attention should be given to the Maiden's Tower, located at the very peak.

Archeology lovers can observe various cultural layers left by the many peoples who occupied this site. After descending, be sure to stroll through the historical center at the foot of the hill, visit the majestic Ulu Mosque, and don't miss the chance to try the famous local Turkish delight and other delicacies for which this region is renowned.

Getting There

The castle is located in the heart of Afyonkarahisar, making it easy to reach from any point in the historical center. Many tourists prefer to walk to the base of the hill, enjoying the atmosphere of the old streets with their characteristic Ottoman houses.

If you are staying in a more distant area, it is most convenient to use a taxi or local public transport, which runs regularly through the city center. The nearest stops and parking areas are located at the very base of the volcanic rock, where the pedestrian route begins.

It is important to remember that the ascent to the fortress itself is via a specially equipped but quite steep staircase. The entire path must be done on foot, as there is no transport to the summit. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes with good grip and carry a supply of water, especially during the hot season.

For travelers with limited mobility, the climb may be a significant challenge due to the large number of steps and the steepness of the slope, so it is worth assessing your physical strength before starting the ascent.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to antiquity, approximately to 1350 BC. The first fortifications on the hilltop were built by the Hittites, who used the natural impregnability of the rock to defend their lands. Later, the castle became an important religious and strategic site for the Phrygians, who left behind traces of worship for the mother goddess Cybele.

Over the centuries, the fortress changed hands many times, belonging to Lydia, Rome, and Byzantium. During the Seljuk era, Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad carried out an extensive reconstruction: the defensive walls were reinforced, a small mosque was built, and even a palace was erected. It was during this period that the castle became a secure repository for the state treasury.

In the 14th and 15th centuries, Afyonkarahisar Castle witnessed dramatic events, including a siege by the troops of Tamerlane. Despite temporary captures, the fortress invariably regained its status as a key outpost and eventually became a permanent part of the Ottoman Empire, preserving its grandeur to this day.

Interestingly, the city's name is closely linked to this stronghold: "Afyon" means opium (the region was famous for its cultivation), and "Karahisar" translates to "Black Fortress," referring to the dark color of the volcanic rock on which the castle stands.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy your visit to the castle, it is recommended to allocate between 1.5 and 3 hours. This time is sufficient for a leisurely climb, a detailed inspection of the ruins, and a rest at the summit with a panoramic view.

The climb up the stairs itself can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your physical fitness. We suggest not rushing and taking small breaks to admire the views of the city, which become more spectacular with every new step.

If you plan to take many photos or want to stay longer at the top to watch the sunset, it is better to budget a bit more time. Also, keep in mind that climbing in the middle of the day can be more exhausting due to the sun.

Working Hours

Afyonkarahisar Castle is open to visitors 24/7 throughout the week. This gives tourists a unique opportunity to choose the most comfortable time for their visit: whether it's early morning as the city wakes up, or late evening when the lights of Afyonkarahisar create a magical atmosphere.

Despite 24-hour access, we recommend planning your climb during daylight hours to ensure safety on the steep steps and to be able to see all the architectural elements and surrounding landscapes in detail.
