How to get to Funafuti

Situated on a narrow coral atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Funafuti is the capital and heart of the nation of Tuvalu. It is not a bustling metropolis, but a calm and picturesque corner where life flows at a measured island rhythm, attracting travellers with its authentic charm and natural beauty. Given the geographical isolation of the region, getting here is possible almost exclusively by air, making the journey itself a true adventure.

For most travellers, the only way to enter the country is by air. The main aerial gateway to the atoll is Funafuti International Airport (FUN), which receives regular flights and connects this remote nation with the outside world.

The airport is located in the immediate vicinity of the main settlements, so the journey to your accommodation takes only a matter of minutes. Generally, routes to Funafuti are planned with a transfer in Fiji, from where small aircraft depart to provide a link to the atoll.

There is absolutely no railway service on the Funafuti atoll. The narrow strip of land and the specific nature of the coral terrain do not support the construction of railways, so trains have never operated here.

Tourists planning a trip to Tuvalu should not consider this mode of transport either as a way to reach the country or as a means of getting around within it.

Since Funafuti is an island capital isolated by the ocean, it is impossible to get here by intercity or international bus. Tuvalu has no land borders with other states.

Small minibuses circulate within the atoll itself, but they serve exclusively for local movements of residents and are not part of international transport corridors.

Reaching Funafuti by car from another country is impossible due to the archipelago's geographical position in the centre of the Pacific Ocean. There are no car ferries connecting the atoll to the continents.

Movement by car is only possible within the limits of the island itself after arrival; however, the distances here are so short that many prefer to use scooters or walk.

5. Connectivity and Internet. Be prepared for the internet to be slow and expensive. This is an excellent place for a digital detox, but if connectivity is critical, check roaming conditions in advance.
6. Sunday Traditions. Sunday in Tuvalu is a day of rest and religious observance. Many establishments may be closed, and noisy behaviour is not welcomed.
