History & Facts

The history of this site began over 230 years ago when William Lamb built the first grist mill here in 1786. At that time, the settlement was known as Lamb’s Crossing; it wasn't until a decade later that the land was purchased by the city's founders to develop Bellefonte. Between 1800 and 1809, the mill was owned by James Smith, a relative of one of the city's founders, highlighting the site's significance to the local elite of that era.

In May 1892, the mill faced a dramatic event — a devastating fire that started in a neighboring grain warehouse. Despite the severe damage, the stone foundation held firm, and in 1893, the building was restored to its current Victorian appearance. The complex received its modern name in honor of George M. Gamble, who owned the enterprise in the early 20th century.

In 1975, the building was under threat of demolition, but thanks to the efforts of enthusiast Ted Conklin, the mill was saved and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This decision was a turning point, preserving one of the few surviving examples of 18th and 19th-century industrial architecture in Centre County. Today, only six of the region's dozens of historic mills remain, and Gamble Mill stands as the most famous among them.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the architecture and cuisine of this site, most visitors need between 1.5 and 3 hours. If you only plan to stop by The Republic for a cocktail or browse the local gift shop, an hour should be sufficient. However, for a leisurely dinner at the restaurant, it is best to set aside at least 2–2.5 hours.

For those who value a historic atmosphere and want to fully immerse themselves in an authentic Pennsylvania lifestyle, staying overnight at the local boutique hotel is highly recommended. This allows you to explore every corner of the building without rushing and enjoy a stroll through the town at night.

Working Hours

According to general information, the Gamble Mill complex is technically open 24/7, as it houses a hotel. However, guests should keep in mind that the Creekside Restaurant, The Republic cocktail bar, and the Smith + Front shop have their own specific operating hours, which may vary depending on the day of the week or the season.

To ensure your visit goes perfectly, we strongly recommend checking the current opening hours of specific establishments on the complex's official website before your visit, especially if you are planning to go during the holidays.
