History & Facts

The history of the area where the famous Big Bear Lake Resort is now located dates back deep into the past. Over two thousand years ago, these lands were inhabited by the indigenous Serrano people. The European discovery of the region is associated with Benjamin Wilson, who explored these parts with his group in 1845. According to legend, while pursuing a group of Native Americans, Wilson's party stumbled upon a lake teeming with grizzly bears. There were so many that twenty-two men were able to catch eleven bears using lassos. It is believed that this event gave the lake its name, Big Bear Lake.

A key moment in shaping the modern appearance of the lake was the construction of a dam. Between 1883 and 1884, an impressive structure about 18 meters high and nearly 90 meters long was built in the San Bernardino Mountains. This resulted in a reservoir that was considered the largest in the world at the time. Initially, its waters were intended for irrigating agricultural land. In 1911, the existing dam was supplemented, increasing its height by more than 6 meters, which allowed the volume of water in the lake to triple. Later, in 1988, the dam was reinforced to meet modern seismic resistance requirements.

The transformation of Big Bear Lake into a popular resort destination began in 1921. That was when Emil Jesserun purchased 16 hectares of land containing a hot spring and built the first major resort – the Pan Hot Springs Hotel. This step marked the beginning of rapid development in tourist infrastructure: other resorts followed Pan Hot Springs, seeking to attract Hollywood celebrities of the era. By 1924, there were 44 resort facilities in Big Bear Lake, and it was constantly full of vacationers. Unfortunately, in 1933, a severe fire caused significant damage to the Pan Hot Springs Hotel, as well as many other hotels and resorts in Big Bear Lake.
