When Bud Schiele retired from his work with the Boy Scouts in 1959, the couple decided to share their massive collection with the public. Their only condition was the construction of a suitable building for the museum. In 1964, the museum was officially transferred to the City of Gastonia for a symbolic fee of one dollar and was renamed in honor of its founders.
