History & Facts

The history of this place began back in 1798, when Cornelius A. Vreeland built a tavern and hotel on a dirt road in Great Notch. In those days, wagoners transporting iron ore and weary travelers stopped here. The building was so significant that local judges sometimes used its rooms to hold court sessions.

During the Prohibition era (1920–1933), the establishment turned into a real "speakeasy" called the Green Chateau. Out front, they sold milk, bread, and fresh eggs, while in the back, hidden from prying eyes, a clandestine bar with a dance hall thrived. Immediately after repeal in 1933, the owners received one of the state's first official liquor licenses, holding the prestigious number four.

The current name — Great Notch Inn — appeared in 1939 following a highway expansion. Since the late 90s, the bar has been run by the third and fourth generations of the same family, carefully preserving the atmosphere of old New Jersey. Even when a highway widening project threatened the building with demolition, the owners managed to defend it and keep its historical appearance intact.

Time Needed

To fully experience the energy of this place, we recommend setting aside 2 to 4 hours for your visit. This is enough time to order dinner, try local drinks, and catch at least one set of live music.

If you plan to visit specifically for the music, it's best to aim for the evening hours when the atmosphere is at its most lively. The compact size of the venue allows you to settle in quickly, but the cozy setting often encourages staying longer.

Working Hours

The establishment operates on an evening schedule, which is perfect for ending a busy day. Monday is a day off, and from Tuesday to Sunday, the doors are open from 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM.

Please note that opening hours and the live music schedule may change, so we recommend checking the bar's official website or calling to confirm before your visit.
