General Weather Overview

The climate in Columbia is characterised by a distinct change of seasons throughout the year. Travellers here can expect rather hot summer months, when the average air temperature can rise above +25°C, and mild winters with an average temperature of about +9-10°C, making frost a rarity. Spring and autumn represent transitional periods with comfortable, moderate temperatures, which are often considered the most pleasant for visiting the city and enjoying outdoor activities.

A specific feature of the weather conditions in Columbia is the distribution of precipitation. Although the total monthly amount of rainfall remains relatively low throughout the year (usually within 2-5 mm), there is an interesting pattern in the number of rainy days. The highest number of days with precipitation occurs in the summer months, especially July and August (up to 17-18 days), which may indicate frequent but not too heavy rains. The lowest number of rainy days is typically recorded in mid-autumn, for example, in October.

Temperature

Columbia experiences a noticeable annual temperature variation, offering diverse climatic conditions throughout the year. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature is around 9.0°C. During this period, nightly lows can drop to an average of 4.5°C, while daily highs reach approximately 13.4°C. Conversely, the hottest month is July, with an average temperature of 27.7°C; at this time, daytime heat can rise to 31.9°C, while nights remain warm with temperatures around 23.4°C.

The summer months in Columbia, especially June, July and August, are characterised by hot weather. Average daytime temperatures during this period consistently stay around 30-32°C, peaking in July (average maximum 31.9°C). Nights also remain very warm, with minimum temperatures rarely falling below 21°C (for example, in June the average minimum is 21.3°C, in July 23.4°C). This creates conditions for typical summer heat, when outdoor activities may be more comfortable in the morning or evening hours.

Winter in Columbia, spanning December, January and February, is distinguished by mild and cool weather. Average temperatures in January, the coldest month, are around 9.0°C. Daily highs in the winter period range from 13°C to 17°C (for example, in February the average maximum is 16.7°C), while nightly lows can drop to 4.5°C - 7°C. Although severe frosts are not typical according to average data, nights can be quite fresh. Throughout the year, moderate diurnal temperature fluctuations are observed: the difference between day and night figures averages 8-11°C, which means a perceptible, but not sharp, cooling as evening approaches.

Precipitation

In Columbia, precipitation is distributed throughout the year with some noticeable fluctuations, although the overall level of rainfall remains relatively low. The city does not experience a pronounced rainy or dry season, but wetter and drier periods can be distinguished.

The highest amount of rainfall and the greatest number of rainy days occur in the summer months. In particular, July and August are the wettest, with an average of 5 mm of precipitation falling. July also sees the maximum number of days with precipitation — about 18, and August — about 17 days. This means that in the middle of summer, it rains quite often, although not necessarily heavily.

On the other hand, the driest month of the year is October, when only 2 mm of precipitation falls, and the lowest number of rainy days is counted — about 7. In other months, the amount of precipitation fluctuates between 3-4 mm. For example, in December, 4 mm of precipitation falls over approximately 10 days, and in January, February, March, April, May, June, September and November — 3 mm each. The number of rainy days in these months varies from 8 to 12. Given the temperature regime, precipitation in Columbia generally falls as rain; snowfall here is unlikely.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Columbia, it is important to consider the changeable nature of the weather throughout the year. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes will be your best companion, as the city is conducive to walking. The principle of layering clothes is the key to comfort, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes during the day. Although the total amount of precipitation is small, "wet days" happen quite often throughout the year, so a compact umbrella or a light waterproof jacket will be useful at almost any time.

In the summer months, from roughly May to September, warm and sometimes hot weather sets in in Columbia. Average maximum temperatures during this period can reach 27-32°C. Your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable clothing: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses made of natural fabrics. Be sure to take sunscreen with a high SPF, headwear (a hat or cap) and sunglasses for protection against the active sun. Despite the low volume of rainfall, the number of days with light rain increases in July and August, so a light waterproof poncho may prove very handy.

From October to April, the weather in Columbia becomes noticeably cooler. In winter, especially in January and December, average minimum temperatures can drop to 4-6°C, and daily highs rarely exceed 13-16°C. During this period, you will need warm clothes: sweaters, fleece jumpers, jeans or thick trousers. It is recommended to bring a mid-season jacket, and for those particularly sensitive to the cold – a light scarf, hat and gloves, especially for evening walks. In the shoulder seasons (March-April and October-November), the weather can be very changeable, so the principle of layering is especially relevant here – combine t-shirts with cardigans, light jumpers or windbreakers.
