How to get to Cordova

Reaching this secluded location in the USA is a small journey in itself, as the city is not connected to the continent's road network. The main ways to get here are by air or sea voyage, making a visit to Cordova a truly exclusive experience.

Air travel is the fastest and most popular way to reach this region. The city is served by Mudhole Smith Airport (CDV), which, despite its small size, ensures a reliable connection with the outside world and receives regular flights.

The airport is located approximately 20 kilometers from the city, and the flight itself often gifts travelers with unforgettable views of snow-capped peaks and the Copper River Delta. Air connections here are well-established, allowing tourists to comfortably plan their trip at any time of the year.

Direct railway connection to the city of Cordova is absent. Due to the complex mountainous terrain and geographic isolation, no railway tracks have been laid connecting the city to the rest of North America.

Tourists who prefer trains are recommended to use rail transport for travelling across the mainland of Alaska (for example, to Anchorage or Fairbanks), and then transfer to a plane to reach the final destination.

It is impossible to get to Cordova by intercity bus, as the city has no land connection with the road system of the USA and Canada. The absence of highways leading to the city makes bus tours from other regions physically impossible.

Nevertheless, car enthusiasts can transport their vehicle to the city by using the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. This is the only way to bring a car to then move freely along local roads, for example, to the famous Childs Glacier.

1. Clothing and Equipment. The weather here is changeable and often rainy. Be sure to take a waterproof jacket, trekking boots, and clothing that can be worn in layers (thermal underwear, fleece).
2. Transport within the city. Public transport is not well developed. To explore the surroundings, it is best to rent a car in advance or use the services of local taxis.
3. Finances. The official currency is the United States Dollar (USD). Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and dining establishments, but having cash with you for small purchases is always useful.

6. Seasonality. Many tourist services and excursions are available only during the summer season (from May to September). In winter, life in the city slows down.
7. Shopping. Prices for groceries and goods here are higher than on the mainland due to complex delivery logistics. Please consider this when planning your budget.
