The park dates back to the late 19th century and has since evolved from a private entertainment zone into a beloved local getaway. Today, it is more than just a green space; it is a full-fledged recreational complex where modern infrastructure coexists with carefully preserved nature. Here, you can find shady walking trails, cozy benches, and vast open spaces for active recreation.

The importance of this place to the local community cannot be overstated. In the early 2000s, thanks to private donations and foundation support, the park underwent significant improvements, including renovated playgrounds and modern sun shelters. East Lake Park serves as a wonderful example of how an urban space can combine the functions of a historical landmark and a comfortable venue for family leisure.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1886, when the East Lake Land company created a private recreation area to attract land buyers. The crown jewel was the man-made Lake Como, designed by engineer A.W. Haskell. By the end of the 19th century, the park had turned into a true entertainment hub with a beach, dance pavilions, and even excursion steamboats.

In the early 20th century, the area caught the attention of Asa Candler, the founder of Coca-Cola, who began actively buying land around the lake. This led to the opening of the famous East Lake Golf Club in 1904. The course design was later perfected by masters such as Tom Bendelow and Donald Ross, turning the area into one of the most prestigious suburbs of its time.

Interestingly, the modern look of the public space was largely shaped by the donation of the Bachmann farm to the city in the 1950s. The old farmhouse was carefully transformed into the Zaban recreation center, and in 1954, a swimming pool was added to the grounds, becoming a popular spot for local residents.

Over the last decades, the park has evolved from a private attraction to a vital municipal site. Thanks to a partnership with the Park Pride organization and significant donations in 2005, the park's infrastructure was substantially updated while preserving its historic atmosphere and natural value for the community.

Time Needed

To take a leisurely stroll along the lakeshore and enjoy the peace and quiet, a typical visitor will need about 1–2 hours. This is plenty of time to explore the main paths and take commemorative photos against the backdrop of the water.
