The history of Fairlawn Mansion began in 1889 when Martin Pattison, a wealthy lumber and mining tycoon, decided to build a home worthy of his status. Pattison, who served three terms as the mayor of Superior, spared no expense: construction cost $150,000, which exceeds $3 million in today's money. The mansion became a symbol of the region's incredible economic boom at the end of the 19th century.

The Pattison family lived here until 1920, after which the building underwent a remarkable metamorphosis. For four decades, until 1962, the mansion's luxurious halls served as a children's home. During this time, approximately 2,000 children in need of care passed through its doors. This humanitarian period in the building's history is carefully documented and presented in the modern exhibition.

After a period of neglect, a large-scale restoration began in the 1990s. Specialists performed a colossal amount of work to return the first floor to its original splendor, restoring the gilded frescoes and original interiors. Today, the building is recognized as a Wisconsin State Historical Site and serves as an important cultural center for the entire Great Lakes region.
