In the heart of Duluth, USA, lies a unique technical treasure — the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Founded in 1973, it is recognized as one of the best transportation museums in America. The museum is housed in the magnificent historic Duluth Union Depot building, which is an attraction in its own right and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The museum's exhibits are spread across six tracks inside a massive depot, allowing for a comfortable visit in any weather. The collection includes an impressive number of historic locomotives and railcars, ranging from early 19th-century steam engines to powerful diesel giants. Here, you can see the famous William Crooks locomotive, the first in Minnesota, and the colossal Yellowstone steam engine.
Adding a special atmosphere to the museum is Depot Square — a detailed, life-sized reconstruction of Duluth's city streets as they appeared in 1910. It is not just a technical display but an interactive space where railroad history comes to life through sound, interior details, and fascinating stories of how the steel rails transformed the Great Lakes region.
