Hamburger King

About

Imagine a place where time seems to have stood still since the 1920s. Hamburger King is not just a diner, but a true historical relic located in the heart of old-town Shawnee. Opened back in 1927 in the USA, it has preserved that unique American Midwest atmosphere that is more often seen in movies today than in reality.

This establishment rightfully holds the status of an Oklahoma legend. High ceilings, vintage rows of tables, and walls densely covered with archival photographs and cowboy artifacts create the feeling of walking through a museum. Here, you can see rare photos of founder George Maxas with icons of Western and country music, making a visit here a must for retro enthusiasts.

Despite the name, the menu offers much more than just fast food. Hamburger King is famous for its unique redtop stew — a hearty meat stew topped with a layer of spicy chili — as well as classic American burgers made according to century-old recipes. The high quality of the kitchen is confirmed by the prestigious Travelers’ Choice award from Tripadvisor.

What to Do

The main attraction here begins even before your food arrives. Be sure to use the famous electronic ordering system installed in the 1960s: there is a telephone at every table, which you use to relay your requests to the kitchen. It’s a fun, interactive experience that instantly transports you back to the era of black-and-white television and the first rock-and-roll hits.

Gastronomically, keep an eye out for the signature "multi-story" burgers — from doubles to quadruples — grilled right in front of you. Local foodies recommend ordering onion rings and placing them directly inside the burger for extra crunch. For dessert, be sure to try the legendary Monkey Tail pie — a delicate combination of a chocolate base, bananas, and light cream.

While you wait for your order, take some time to explore the walls. It’s a full-fledged exhibition of Oklahoma history: photos of the founders, musical instruments, and memorabilia related to cowboy culture. The atmosphere is complemented by the sounds of classic jingles from the last century, creating the perfect backdrop for a retro-style lunch.

Getting There

Finding Hamburger King is easy — it’s located in the heart of the city’s historic center at 322 E Main St. If you are traveling by car, there is convenient parking near the cafe. For those making the legendary Route 66 trip, this spot is an ideal stop to experience authentic Oklahoma roadside cuisine.

For travelers based in Oklahoma City, the easiest way to get here is by taxi or Uber/Lyft services. The drive takes about 40 minutes via the highway. Local buses run within the city itself, but most tourists prefer to reach the downtown area by car to see other historic buildings along the way.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1927 thanks to George Maxas, an immigrant from Lebanon. His family left their homeland due to religious persecution and were headed by train to the city of Bristow. However, due to a language barrier, they got off at the wrong stop and ended up in Shawnee. Instead of getting upset, George decided to open a diner here, and this accidental decision turned the establishment into a local legend.

In 1965, Hamburger King faced a major trial — a fire practically destroyed the building. The establishment moved to a new location, where it remains to this day. It was then that the telephone ordering system from the tables, unique for its time, was introduced. Since then, the interior has remained virtually unchanged: even when the booths have to be repainted, the owners try to preserve that mid-20th-century spirit.

Today, the restaurant is run by the fourth generation of the Maxas family. The place is so iconic that the famous musician Bob Wills, the "King of Western Swing," even wrote a special jingle in honor of the diner. His photo with the founder still adorns the walls, serving as a reminder of the glorious past.

Time Needed

For a full visit to Hamburger King, 30 to 60 minutes is quite enough. This is enough time to place your order, enjoy a classic American burger, and leisurely explore the "museum" walls covered with old photos and artifacts.

If you decide to drop by during peak hours, the wait time for your order may increase slightly, but the immersion in the retro atmosphere is well worth it. It’s the perfect place for a quick but memorable lunch during your trip through the USA.
