General Weather Overview

The climate of Fergana can be described as continental, with distinct seasons, which is typical for this region of Uzbekistan. The weather here is characterised by stability: summers are generally hot and arid, whilst winters are mild and relatively short. Thanks to its location in the valley, the city is often sheltered from harsh winds, making a stay here comfortable for most of the year.

The summer months, particularly July and August, bring heat with daytime temperatures often exceeding +33°C and minimal rainfall. This time is ideal for those who love the sun and warmth. Winter here is cool but not extremely cold: the average temperature in January hovers around +2°C, although night frosts are not uncommon, and tourists should ensure they have warm clothing.

The most pleasant time for walks and excursions is considered to be the transitional seasons. Spring arrives early, bringing not only warmth but also the highest number of rainy days in the year, especially in April and May. Autumn, conversely, delights with dry and clear weather with comfortable temperatures that gradually decrease from September to November, creating ideal conditions for exploring sights without the exhausting heat.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Fergana is distinguished by marked seasonality, characteristic of a continental climate. The annual temperature range varies from light night frosts in winter to intense heat in the middle of summer. The coldest month is traditionally January with an average temperature of about +2.0°C, when night-time readings can drop to -1.6°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in July: at this time, the air warms up on average to +29.0°C, and daytime maximums often reach the +36°C mark.

Summer in the city can be characterised as hot and dry. In the period from June to August, the thermometer during the day consistently stays in the range of +33°C to +36°C. However, it is worth noting the significant fluctuations between day and night temperatures: after the scorching sun comes a pleasant coolness, when the air cools down to a comfortable +20°C...+22°C. May and September offer a "velvet season" with mild warmth, when daytime temperatures are +28°C...+29°C, which is ideal for long walks.

Winter in Fergana is generally mild and brief. In December and January, the air warms up to +5°C...+6°C during the day, and by February, the approach of spring is already felt with daytime temperatures around +9°C. Night frosts occur, but they are rarely extreme, usually limited to values around -1°C...-2°C. Travellers should be prepared for cool weather, but severe frosts are uncharacteristic for this region.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Fergana falls quite evenly throughout the year, but in very small quantities, making the city's climate dry and comfortable for travel. In winter, when the temperature can drop below freezing (especially in January and December), snow or sleet is possible, although strong blizzards are a rarity here. On average, about 7 days with precipitation per month are recorded in winter.

Spring is considered the period when it rains most often, although the intensity remains low. March, April, and May lead in the number of "wet" days — from 11 to 12 days per month. Despite these statistics, these are usually light, short-lived rains that are quickly replaced by sunshine, refreshing the air and promoting the blossoming of nature.

Summer and early autumn are the driest times of the year. In August and September, the probability of precipitation drops to a minimum: in August, for example, only 4 days with possible precipitation are recorded on average, and the volume tends towards zero. This is the ideal time for those who prefer guaranteed clear weather for walking around the city and its surroundings.

What to Pack

Fergana features a continental climate with distinct seasons, so the contents of your suitcase will depend directly on your travel dates. For a summer trip, when the air temperature in July often rises to 35°C and above, light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics — cotton or linen — is vitally necessary. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high protection factor, as the sun here is very active.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable but changeable times to visit. March and April see the highest number of rainy days, so a light waterproof windbreaker and a compact umbrella will become your faithful companions. It is recommended to use the principle of layering: a combination of a t-shirt, jumper, and light jacket will allow you to quickly adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Also, do not forget comfortable, broken-in shoes that are perfect for long walks along the city streets.

If you are planning a trip in winter, be prepared for cool weather: the average temperature hovers around +2...+5°C, and frosts are possible at night. You will need a warm jacket or coat, as well as a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Although there is little precipitation in winter, dampness can increase the sensation of cold, so choose items that retain heat well and protect against the wind.
