The Basilica of Our Lady of the Valley is the spiritual heart of Margarita Island and one of the most significant Catholic shrines Venezuela has to offer. Located in the picturesque village of El Valle del Espíritu Santo near the city of Porlamar, it is a magnificent example of Neo-Gothic architecture.
This church, holding the status of a minor basilica, is dedicated to the Virgin of the Valley — the patron saint of sailors and the Venezuelan Navy. The building, designed in the shape of a Latin cross, is adorned with two elegant four-tiered towers featuring niches and pointed arches, creating a sublime and austere silhouette against the backdrop of tropical greenery.
Inside the basilica, an atmosphere of reverence prevails: sunlight streams through bright stained-glass windows, illuminating the altar and the dome above the presbytery. The temple's primary treasure is the sacred icon of the Virgin Mary, brought from Spain in the 16th century, which has survived many remarkable events over the centuries, making this site a must-visit for any traveler.
